Zack Snyder Officially Confirms Director’s Cut for 15 Year Old Divisive Thriller

Rise and shine, Sucker Punch fans. Zack Snyder is returning with a director’s cut for the cult classic 15 years after it was originally released. On the Happy, Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, the man behind Batman vs. Superman confirmed that the Sucker Punch director’s cut is in development.

While promoting his latest indie release, The Last Photograph, Snyder said on the podcast that every time he talks with Warner Bros., they are discussing the Sucker Punch director’s cut. He noted,

Definitely on the docket.

He mentioned that it is not a completely smooth process to get the director’s cut released, as there are some licensing issues yet to be finalized. Snyder added that he also plans on gathering the cast to record additional ADR. He noted that extra footage for the director’s cut was already shot previously.

Released in 2011, Sucker Punch did not perform well at the box office. The movie only grossed about $89.9 million globally (via Box Office Mojo), while the production budget excluding marketing costs was $82 million. With Snyder in the directorial hat, expectations were high about the action fantasy. However, the movie earned only about $19 million on opening weekend.

There were several reasons behind the box office failure, or so the critics think. According to a review by Cinemablend, Sucker Punch, at a glance, looks like three different movies crammed together. It essentially follows Babydoll (Emily Browning), a woman trapped inside a harsh mental asylum by her abusive stepfather. To cope with the trauma, she starts living inside an imagination, where the asylum turns into a cabaret and brothel run by evil men. Inside the cabaret, she meets Blondie (Vanessa Hudgens), Rocket (Jena Malone), Sweet Pea (Abbie Cornish), and Jamie Chung (Amber), who are also captive to the corrupt men.

Sucker Punch then goes to a fantasy level when Babydoll goes deeper into her mind. The group of women turns into powerful action heroes battling with all sorts of villains to find five hidden items needed to escape the place. Snyder perhaps tried his best to blend the genres together, but the execution could not really target a specific demographic who would actually be interested in the movie. Bad critic reviews only made it harder for the film to bounce back at theaters.

Nonetheless, Sucker Punch is still considered a cult classic among Snyder fans, who have been eagerly waiting for the Director’s Cut all these years.
