5 Weakest Upper Moons in Demon Slayer, Ranked

The Upper Moons are supposed to be Demon Slayer‘s nightmare made flesh. Muzan’s most powerful surviving demons have slaughtered Hashira, survived Nichirin blades, and turned entire battlefields into death traps. Defeating even one is a historic achievement for the Demon Slayer Corps. Yet the Upper Ranks are not remotely equal in how effectively they perform in battle. Some are terrifying in the right circumstances, while others have glaring weaknesses that become obvious once a capable Demon Slayer finds the opening.

That makes characters like Daki, Kaigaku, Nakime, Gyokko, and Hantengu especially fascinating. Their rankings reveal just how differently an Upper Moon can weaponize Muzan’s power.

5 Daki’s Obi Attacks Fall Short Against Stronger Demon Slayers

Daki is technically the weakest entry here, but calling her weak would be wildly misleading. As the secondary holder of Upper Rank Six, she had killed seven Hashira and could spread her sentient obi across the Entertainment District, controlling multiple targets while fighting at range. Once her dispersed obi returned to her, she demonstrated enough power to slice through Nezuko’s body and destroy buildings with her attacks.

Her problem is that Daki’s individual combat ability does not represent the full threat of Upper Six. The Entertainment District battle revealed that Gyutaro was the true combat monster behind their shared rank. Daki was repeatedly pressured by Tanjiro, Zenitsu, Inosuke, and Nezuko, while her brother possessed the poison, speed, and battle experience that nearly killed the entire group. So Daki earns the bottom spot here not because her obi is harmless.

4 Kaigaku Never Mastered His New Upper Moon Powers

Kaigaku’s fourth placement comes with a giant asterisk: he barely had time to become an Upper Moon. After encountering Kokushibo, the former Demon Slayer accepted demonization and eventually replaced Daki and Gyutaro as Upper Rank Six. His Blood Demon Art enhanced his Thunder Breathing with electricity, allowing him to burn and slash Zenitsu repeatedly during their battle.

And yet Kaigaku’s greatest weakness was precisely how unfinished that power remained. Yushiro later explains that Kaigaku had not yet mastered his abilities during his short tenure and suggests that Zenitsu would have been in far greater danger if Kaigaku had survived another year. Kaigaku dominated much of his fight with Zenitsu, severely injuring him, only to be instantly decapitated when Zenitsu unveiled his self-created Seventh Form, Honoikazuchi no Kami.

3 Gyokko’s Strange Techniques Couldn’t Overwhelm Muichiro

Ranking third, Gyokko might have one of the strangest arsenals in Demon Slayer, which is exactly what makes his defeat so fascinating. His Blood Demon Art revolves around manipulating pots, summoning aquatic creatures, teleporting between vessels, and trapping opponents in increasingly bizarre attacks. His true form also dramatically increases his physical abilities and gives him a deadly touch that transforms whatever it strikes into fish.

During the Swordsmith Village battle, Gyokko initially appeared to have Muichiro completely trapped. He imprisoned the Mist Hashira inside a water-filled vase, forcing Muichiro toward suffocation. But once Muichiro escaped and awakened his Demon Slayer Mark, the fight changed almost immediately. Gyokko’s elaborate techniques could not prevent the marked Hashira from overwhelming him, and Muichiro ultimately decapitated him.

2 Nakime’s Blood Demon Art Is Better for Control Than Combat

Nakime is the strangest case on this list because her value as an Upper Moon is enormous even though her direct fighting ability is barely noteworthy, which is why she ranks second. After Hantengu’s death, she became the new Upper Rank Four, and Muzan relied on her to manipulate the Infinity Castle during the final battle. Her Blood Demon Art essentially turns the battlefield itself into her weapon. By playing her biwa, Nakime can manipulate rooms, shift positions, separate opponents, and control movement throughout the Infinity Castle.

Nakime does not demonstrate the same close-range offensive feats as Hantengu or Gyokko. Her strength lies in making everyone else’s fight harder, not necessarily in personally overpowering a Hashira with raw physical force. Her second position therefore reflects her exceptional strategic utility rather than a claim that she is universally weaker in every possible scenario.

1 Hantengu’s Multiple Forms Make Him the Strongest of the Five

Coming at the top, Hantengu is arguably the most difficult character here to evaluate by conventional power-scaling because killing his visible body does not actually solve the problem. His Blood Demon Art allows him to divide into manifestations representing different emotions, including Sekido, Karaku, Aizetsu, and Urogi. The situation becomes even more dangerous when Sekido absorbs the others and produces Zohakuten, while Hantengu’s tiny main body remains hidden.

That setup turned the Swordsmith Village battle into a nightmare of attrition. Tanjiro, Nezuko, Genya and Mitsuri were forced to deal with multiple threats while simultaneously trying to locate Hantengu’s real body. Hantengu’s greatest weapon is therefore not simply destructive power. It is the absurd difficulty of actually finishing him. His opponent must survive multiple manifestations, identify the true body, and prevent him from escaping before sunrise.
