The sentence cuts straight through Denji’s entire existence. Before becoming Chainsaw Man, he was a poor teenager buried under debt and forced to hunt Devils simply to survive. Pochita’s sacrifice gave him a new life, but it also turned his body into something other people could desire, fear, manipulate, or control.

Reze enters Denji’s life offering the kind of attention he has desperately wanted. Their encounters feel playful and surprisingly ordinary, giving Denji a glimpse of a teenage life he never had. For someone who grew up without stability, even swimming together or spending time alone can feel enormous.

But there is a cruel catch. Reze is not simply a girl who wandered into Denji’s life. She is the Bomb Devil hybrid, and Denji’s identity as Chainsaw Man remains inseparable from their relationship. That makes his observation about Chainsaw Man’s heart so much more painful. The literal object inside him is valuable to governments, Devils, and enemies, while the boy carrying it still wonders whether anybody actually cares about him. The irony is almost obscene: Denji possesses the most coveted heart in his world, yet he is emotionally starving.

Denji has spent much of his life learning that survival comes with conditions. People give him food because they want work done. Public Safety gives him a home because they need Chainsaw Man. Makima’s attention becomes tangled with her interest in his power. Reze, meanwhile, initially approaches him as part of a mission, even as the story complicates the question of what she genuinely feels.

That is why Denji’s heartbreak never feels like a conventional failed romance. He is trying to answer a much bigger question: If Chainsaw Man disappeared, would anyone still choose Denji? The series eventually keeps returning to that conflict between Denji’s identity and the public’s fascination with Chainsaw Man. It is not simply about Reze, Makima, or even Chainsaw Man. It is about Denji wanting his ordinary heart to matter. And perhaps that is the saddest thing about him.
