Dying is usually the end of a hero’s story, but in a few anime it is often the beginning. 1 Re:ZERO – Subaru Dies and Learns He Can Return by Death

In Re:ZERO, Subaru Natsuki is pulled into a fantasy world with no powers and dies within hours. Instead of ending the story, that death reveals his ability: Return by Death, which sends him back to an earlier point every time he dies.

It is a brutal gift, since he keeps the memories and trauma of every fatal mistake, and over time it turns from a curse into his greatest weapon. Subaru is no fighter, so the power is about learning, sacrifice, and endurance. That makes Re:ZERO the most direct answer to this list’s premise, because dying is the mechanic itself.

2 Lord of Mysteries – Klein Kills Himself and Merges With Zhou Mingrui

In Lord of Mysteries, Zhou Mingrui, a modern Chinese youth, wakes in the body of Klein Moretti, a young graduate in a Victorian-style world, after Klein apparently takes his own life. Strangely, the body has healed itself from a fatal wound. At first, it seems Zhou gained the power of the gray fog after performing the luck enhancement ritual a second time, hoping to return home.

Only at the story’s end does the truth land: Zhou dies once more, his heart is ripped out, and it regrows after he is buried. The healing comes from the gray fog. Furthermore, the grey fog protects him from literal gods, as he was able to survive looking directly at the sun god.

3 Black Torch – Jirou Dies and Merges With Ragou

In Black Torch, Jirou Azuma is a teenage descendant of ninja who can talk to animals. When he defends a black cat, actually a mononoke named Ragou, from a hostile spirit, he is stabbed through the chest and mortally wounded.

Ragou could have devoured his fading energy but gives his own to Jirou instead, reviving him and fusing them into one. The new power suits Jirou’s ninja training: their abilities appear as smoke that shifts in size and shape, sometimes forming fists. The anime began airing in July 2026, which makes it a good time to catch up.

4 One Piece – Luffy Got His Best Power-Up After Dying Against Kaido

Luffy’s best power-up in One Piece comes from his lowest point. After Kaido beats him once, Luffy returns for a rematch, but a CP0 agent’s interference leaves him defeated and declared dead on top of the Skull Dome. Then Zunesha hears the Drums of Liberation, and Luffy revives as his Gum-Gum Fruit finishes awakening.

It is revealed as the Human-Human Fruit, Model: Nika, and Luffy transforms into Gear 5, a rubbery, cartoonish form that lets him reshape his surroundings with full freedom. Behind the silliness, it is arguably the most dangerous power-up in the anime. Whether he truly died is debated, but the story treats it as a rebirth.

5 Yu Yu Hakusho – Yuusuke Becomes a Spirit Detective

Yuusuke Urameshi from Yu Yu Hakusho is a delinquent who dies in the first episode after saving a child from a car. He is given a chance to return and comes back as a Spirit Detective tasked with fighting demons and other threats from the spirit world. The death is what hands him the job, and his Spirit Gun soon becomes his signature power. Later in the anime, his demon heritage awakens after another death, which is the bigger power spike of the two. It is a classic example of dying as a promotion.
