Spoiler Alert !!!
This article contains some spoilers from One Piece Episode 1159.
While going into One Piece Episode 1159, I expected to see a tense escape of the Straw Hats from that so-called “Sun God” we met in the previous episode. However, I was pleasantly surprised by an episode that provides a more comprehensive payoff. Yes, there was still plenty of action, but the episode carefully added important character moments and major revelations, like who this “Sun God” really is and why he created this Diorama in the first place.
From Nami confidently navigating after memorizing the entire layout to the important presence of Iscat and those trapped inside the setup reacting to the devastation of their surroundings, this episode consistently showed that the Straw Hats’ escape was secondary to the overall collapse of a broken system.
The Straw Hats’ Escape Felt Chaotic, but Perfectly Controlled
The chase scene in One Piece Episode 1159 balanced the urgency and control very well. Nami completely owning the escape route without even needing the blueprint was a standout moment – it reinforced her importance beyond just support.

At the same time, Roronoa Zoro and Sanji slicing through the steel net showed how quickly the crew can dismantle something that was supposedly built to hold even giants. Smaller moments, such as when Usopp attempts to break the wall but fails, add a little extra depth to the overall feeling of the episode.
Then, at the end of the episode, Luffy makes his move with an attack based on Gear Fourth, and that moment hit because of how it was built up throughout the episode – it did not feel like a random power move; it felt like it had to happen.
From start to finish, the episode was really tense; it basically felt like a see-saw. Sometimes you see Straw Hats completely in charge, and the next time you see the so-called “Sun God” pulling out a trick to capture them. It was a tense episode, yet at the same time, really engaging and entertaining as well.
One Piece Episode 1159: The “Sun God” Reveal Changes Everything
Finding out the Sun God is Road was an unexpected twist for me personally. It revealed the entire weirdness of the diorama, as well as added a disturbing layer to it. Also, Road’s desire to turn the Straw Hats into “living dolls” and control everything with them just adds to the already unsettling nature of the entire diorama.

Road’s view towards humanity creates a tension for the upcoming Elbaf arc as well, because it clearly suggests that there is already a power struggle taking place there. Even the way he reacts to the destruction of his “gods,” like the Glutbunny reveal, shows how detached he is from reality.
A Payoff Episode That Elevates the Elbaf Arc
By the end of One Piece Episode 1159, I felt like everything finally fit into place. The escape from the diorama was not just visually satisfying – it also symbolized the crew breaking free from a false narrative that had been controlling the situation. When Monkey D. Luffy finally smashes through and sees the outside, it genuinely feels like a turning point.

It delivers the answers it needs to, keeps the pacing tight, and leaves just enough mystery for what comes next. For me, Episode 1159 stands out as one of those transitional episodes that quietly does a lot of heavy lifting – and does it really well.
The One Piece anime is currently available to watch on Crunchyroll.
