From Absolute Batman to The Dark Knight: The 7 Deadliest Batmobiles, Ranked

While Absolute Batman showed just how much Batman can do without his wealth and abundant resources, the Caped Crusader has always been the sum of his machines. Be it his utility belt or his Batcave, he compensates for his lack of superpowers with incredible tech that aids him in his vigilante activities. And nothing is more useful than his Batmobile.

Across comics, film, and video games, the car has evolved from a modified car into a rolling weapons platform capable of leveling city blocks. The following list gathers seven of the most formidable Batmobiles. Each entry is judged on power and combat readiness, and ranked from least to most deadly.

7 Nolan’s BatPod is a Nimble Escape Machine

The BatPod is built from the wreckage of The Tumbler. Debuting in the Joker’s truck chase sequence, the BatPod is, for lack of a better term, a motorcycle, forged from one side of the Batmobile. Batman uses it to escape from the car after it sustains critical damage and continues the chase. He goes from the underpass to a mall and finally uses it to flip the truck.

While the Pod is a great escape vehicle, as it demonstrates again in The Dark Knight Rises, it has limited capabilities as a combat vehicle. It lacks any kind of protective covering, and apart from speed and a few guns on its wheels (which are quite deadly, not going to lie), there is not much it can do against enemies. Hence, it ranks last. 

6 The Batman’s Muscle Car Has a DIY Quality to It

Robert Pattinson’s Batman is in his initial years as the vigilante. While he is still a rich kid, he is rusty in his skills and does not have someone like Lucius Fox to design military-grade tech for him. All he has is Alfred. So, The Batman’s muscle car is like a 1969 Dodge Charger, fitted with a V8 engine that produces over 700 horsepower.

It also carries an auxiliary jet for high-speed bursts and a strong front end built for ramming. However, it does not have dedicated weaponry. There are no guns, no missiles, and no armor plating beyond what a street car might carry. It is intimidating and fast, but its power comes from muscle. It had some pretty cool aura moments in The Batman, and the set photos from the sequel are pretty cool as well.

5 The Zero Year Batmobile Is Gaudy But Is Built for Evasion

Scott Snyder has gotten multiple shots at making the Batmobile, and we will see other versions of his later in the list. However, the Zero Year Batmobile is certainly one of the more unique designs in the comics. It is not just a muscle car or a motorcycle, but quite a gaudy vehicle. It is the yellow Batwing design that makes it quirky and unique.

When it comes to functionality, one of its most useful features is that it can change its tire traction in the middle of the chase, allowing Batman to change direction and evade his pursuers. That being said, it does not have a lot of ammo to be purely deadly. It is a great vehicle to escape, but not for attacks. The retro aesthetic is pretty cool, though.

4 The Tumbler Grounded the Batmobile in Military Tech

Christopher Nolan stripped Batman of all fantasy and comic-book voodoo, and gave him a grounded presence, which is why The Dark Knight trilogy is still one of the best movie trilogies. Every tech he uses was created by Wayne Enterprises’ discontinued Applied Sciences division under Lucius Fox. This includes the Tumbler. Bruce is lucky it came in black.

It carries twin front-mounted machine guns, a rocket launcher, deployable road spikes, and a jet engine that allows it to make rampless jumps across gaps in the city. Its armored, all-terrain chassis was built to survive combat conditions rather than street racing. While it gets destroyed in The Dark Knight, it still has heavy ammo and survives the streets.

3 Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns Batmobile is a Tank

Oh, now they are just showing off! Frank Miller’s seminal graphic novel, The Dark Knight Returns, amped up everything to a hundred. Batman, though retired, was bulkier than a lot of his predecessors, and Gotham was a more disgusting crime cesspool. To match such an aesthetic, they needed a Batmobile that was a monster.

So, we got a tank. This version is a heavily armored, treaded assault vehicle capable of ramming through barricades, firing rubber ammunition at hostile crowds, and projecting raw intimidation onto the gangs terrorizing Gotham. Built specifically to scare the mutants, its firepower and armor are military-grade, and it ranks high on the intimidation scale. The aesthetic and what it represents for comics as a whole are why Frank Miller remains one of the most powerful Batman writers.

2 Absolute Batman’s Ride Shows His Blue-Collar Origins

Everything in Absolute Batman has a Darkseid energy. Bruce Wayne is not a rich kid anymore. He is a blue-collar worker who uses his time to fight crime. He does not have silly rules, and his brutality knows no bounds. When the Joker is a literal monster in this universe, we need a Batmobile that matches the aesthetic.

If The Dark Knight Returns Batmobile is a tank, then the Absolute Batmobile is a monster truck on top of a tank. It begins as a construction vehicle the size of a house, capable of plowing through traffic, before collapsing into a smaller, rocket-boosted attack configuration with an armored gunnery seat. It can also be maneuvered anywhere, fire electric charges, and wield a ball and chain for close combat.

1 The Arkham Knight Batmobile is Built to Attack Tanks

This Batmobile is the single most heavily armed vehicle Batman has ever driven. Powered by a twelve-hundred-horsepower hybrid power cell with a jet turbine, it switches between a high-speed Pursuit Mode and a tank-like Battle Mode built for direct combat. 

Its arsenal includes a sixty-millimeter cannon that fires kinetic penetrator shells capable of piercing eight hundred twenty millimeters of steel armor, a rapid-fire Vulcan gun with anti-tank and anti-aircraft capability, a guided missile barrage that can strike six targets at once, and an electromagnetic pulse system that can knock incoming missiles out of the sky.

No other Batmobile comes close to the Arkham Knight one in terms of defense and attack. It is built to withstand heavy attacks and can strike back when the time comes.
