Every Resident Evil Movie, Ranked (& Where to Stream Them)

Few video game franchises have been put through Hollywood’s machinery as relentlessly as Resident Evil. Milla Jovovich spent six movies fighting Umbrella Corporation, Welcome to Raccoon City attempted a game-faithful reset, and Capcom’s animated films kept Leon Kennedy and company closer to established game continuity. Now, Zach Cregger has reopened Raccoon City with another interpretation.

Cregger’s Resident Evil arrives in theaters on September 18, 2026, with Austin Abrams leading an original story rather than another direct retelling of the games. More importantly for this ranking, the critical response has changed the franchise pecking order dramatically: the movie currently holds 96% on Rotten Tomatoes from more than 100 reviews, giving it by far the strongest substantial critical reception of any Resident Evil film. With that new contender included, all 12 Resident Evil feature films have been ranked below using critical reception, entertainment value, horror, longevity, and how well each understands Capcom’s games.

12 Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2016)

Alice deserved a less exhausting goodbye. Paul W.S. Anderson certainly supplies carnage, but the hyperactive editing frequently makes the action harder to enjoy than it should be, while years of increasingly convoluted mythology finally catch up with the screenplay. There is still some satisfaction in watching Jovovich complete a 15-year run that became synonymous with cinematic Resident Evil.

11 Resident Evil: Retribution (2012)

Resident Evil: Retribution turns Umbrella’s enormous simulation facility into an excuse to revisit characters, locations, and scenarios without worrying much about coherence. That gives the fifth movie enormous latitude for action, although the connective story becomes increasingly tenuous. Its 28% Tomatometer reflects that messy reception, even if the excess has acquired its own peculiar charm.

10 Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004)

This should have been the jackpot for game devotees because Raccoon City, Jill Valentine, and Nemesis finally enter the live-action series. Unfortunately, familiar iconography cannot compensate for ungainly storytelling and some dated action filmmaking. At 18% on Rotten Tomatoes, Resident Evil: Apocalypse remains the worst-reviewed entry from the original live-action run.

9 Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010)

Anderson embraced the 3D craze without an ounce of restraint, so axes, bullets, monsters, and debris spend plenty of time heading directly toward the audience. The gimmick dates the film, but its brazen action still makes Resident Evil: Afterlife entertaining when logic takes the day off. It also remains the original series’ biggest domestic earner, with $60.1 million in North America (via Box Office Mojo).

8 Resident Evil: Vendetta (2017)

Leon Kennedy, Chris Redfield, and Rebecca Chambers join forces against Glenn Arias, and Resident Evil: Vendetta responds by pushing the franchise toward extravagant gun-fu and increasingly audacious action. The result can be ridiculous, yet the commitment keeps it watchable. Its 43% Tomatometer places it below the stronger animated installments.

7 Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021)

Johannes Roberts gave game fans plenty they had requested, including Claire and Chris Redfield, Leon, Jill, Wesker, Spencer Mansion, and the Raccoon City Police Department. The trouble begins when material from the first two games competes for space inside 107 minutes. The fidelity is admirable in Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, but overcrowding leaves several characters underserved.

6 Resident Evil: Extinction (2007)

Moving Alice into the Nevada desert gave the third movie an identity of its own, and Russell Mulcahy wisely resisted making another dimly lit variation on the first two installments. The post-apocalyptic setting in Resident Evil: Extinction allows the series to broaden its scale while keeping Umbrella and its experiments close enough to maintain continuity.

5 Resident Evil: Degeneration (2008)

Degeneration benefits enormously from belonging to the games’ continuity rather than Alice’s separate universe, which means Leon and Claire can behave like the characters players already know without an elaborate introduction. The animation has aged considerably since 2008, but the conspiracy involving the G-Virus gives it the unmistakable flavor of classic Resident Evil. Rotten Tomatoes confirms that Capcom’s CG films share continuity with the games.

4 Resident Evil: Death Island (2023)

Sometimes fan service earns its keep. Death Island finally puts Jill, Leon, Chris, Claire, and Rebecca into the same adventure as their separate investigations converge on Alcatraz. The pleasure comes from watching characters with decades of history interact without requiring the film to manufacture another continuity around them. The movie currently carries a 71% Tomatometer.

3 Resident Evil: Damnation (2012)

Damnation remains the most accomplished animated entry because its civil-war setting gives Leon’s mission more substance than another straightforward outbreak story. Bio-Organic Weapons have become instruments of warfare, while Ada Wong’s presence adds another layer of uncertainty. The film holds a rare 100% Rotten Tomatoes score, although that number comes from a small sample of reviews.

2 Resident Evil (2002)

Paul W.S. Anderson took considerable liberties with Capcom’s source material, but the gamble produced the most durable movie of the original series. The Hive remains an effective setting because its clinical corridors gradually become more claustrophobic as the T-virus outbreak worsens, while the Red Queen and infamous laser corridor created imagery that survived long after the sequels abandoned this comparatively restrained approach. Milla Jovovich’s Alice also gave the film series an identity separate from the games.

The movie earned nearly $103 million worldwide from a reported $33 million production budget, which opened the door for five sequels (via Box Office Mojo).

1 Resident Evil (2026)

After more than two decades of live-action attempts, Zach Cregger has delivered the franchise’s strongest critical reception without photocopying a Capcom game. Austin Abrams plays Bryan, an ordinary medical courier whose trip into Raccoon City deteriorates into a 90-minute survival nightmare. Cregger borrows the games’ rhythms, including dwindling resources, grotesque creatures, and the anxiety surrounding whatever waits around the next corner, while telling an original story.

Resident Evil currently sits at 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, and The Hollywood Reporter called Cregger’s reinvention an “exhilarating shot in the arm” for the fatigued franchise. Cregger also explained that he changed the movie after test screenings by removing jokes once he discovered the film played better when its horror was allowed more room. The Hollywood Reporter reported that audiences responded more favorably after the adjustment.
