According to the B.C. Transportation Ministry, the driver failed to follow an approved route.

The crash was the 24th bridge or overpass strike in the province this year, and the 18th in the Lower Mainland.

The driver was charged under the Motor Vehicle Act with driving without due care and attention. The offence carries a $368 fine and six-point penalty against the driver’s licence.

Infrastructure crashes such as bridge and overpass strikes cost millions of dollars in highway repairs and pose a safety risk for drivers, said the province.

This spring, the B.C. government implemented tougher penalties against commercial truck drivers who crash into provincial infrastructure. The new measures allowed courts to impose fines of up to $100,000 and jail time of up to 18 months.
