In the world of JRPGs, some stories are remembered long after players put down the controller. Suikoden II is one of them, and now its story is finally coming to the small screen with Suikoden: The Anime.
The anime premieres on October 3, 2026, with a special 60-minute first episode. It will then continue as a 23-episode series (with the double-length first episode accounting for the 24-slot two-cour run), bringing the Dunan Unification War, its many characters, and the famous 108 Stars of Destiny to anime fans.

The first episode will be a special 60-minute extended episode, giving the anime more time to introduce its main characters and set up the story. Broadcasting will begin sequentially from October 3 on TOKYO MX and several other stations across Japan. Since the anime will air on different stations, the exact broadcast time can vary depending on the channel.
The earliest listed broadcast begins at 8 PM JST on October 3. For viewers from the US, that works out to 4 AM PDT and 7 AM EDT on the same day. After the October 3 launch, the anime will move into its regular schedule, with broadcasts scheduled to continue weekly on Tuesdays from October 13 at 11:30 PM JST (via the official website).
Meanwhile, streaming will also begin sequentially from October 3, 2026, across platforms like ABEMA, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video, which are carrying the anime streaming in Japan. This means fans won’t have to wait for so long to get access to the first episode.
What to Expect from Suikoden: The Anime
Suikoden: The Anime is based on Suikoden II rather than the first game. The story takes place three years after the events of the original Suikoden and follows childhood friends Riliu and Jowy. The two begin as members of Highland’s Unicorn Youth Brigade. However, a sudden turn of events pulls them into a much bigger conflict between the Highland Kingdom and the City-States of Jowston.
What makes Suikoden II stand out is that the story is about much more than a war. Friendship, loyalty, betrayal, politics, and personal choices all become important as the conflict grows. The anime also has a huge cast to handle. That makes the 60-minute premiere especially useful. Instead of rushing through the opening, the anime gets extra time to introduce its world and show how Riliu and Jowy become caught up in the larger conflict.
The music is another part of the adaptation worth watching. amazarashi performs the opening theme, “Kanashimi Sae Otonabite,” while Koji Nakamura performs the ending theme “closed eye sun,” featuring Honoka Takahashi. Nakamura is also handling the series’ music.
Suikoden: The Anime Episode Count

The first part begins in October 2026, and Episode 1 will be a 60-minute extended special, while the later episodes will follow the regular television format.
The 23-episode count gives the anime plenty of room to explore Suikoden II‘s large story. The series has to deal with the growing war, the friendship between Riliu and Jowy, different factions, and a large group of important characters. That is one of the most interesting parts of the adaptation. A shorter season could have made the story feel rushed, but two cours give the anime more time to let its characters and conflicts develop.
