Jensen Ackles has spent years being fancast as Batman, but one tiny social-media move has thrown another log on the fire. He has started following DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn on Instagram, an intriguing development given how openly the Supernatural and The Boys star has entertained the idea of playing Bruce Wayne. It is a breadcrumb, not a Bat-Signal from Warner Bros. Gunn most recently shot down reports that DC Studios had secretly cast its Batman, replying “De and bunked” when questioned about the rumor in July (per SuperHeroHype).
Ackles is hardly new to Batman. He has voiced Bruce Wayne several times, openly wants a crack at the live-action role, and has already discussed how Gunn could help him find a version audiences haven’t seen before.
Jensen Ackles Has Been Circling Batman for Years
Jensen Ackles in The Boys Season 5 | Credits: Prime VideoJensen Ackles already knows his way around the cowl. He voiced Bruce Wayne in Batman: The Long Halloween before continuing as the character through Legion of Super-Heroes, Justice League: Warworld, and the Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths trilogy. FandomWire’s ranking of Ackles’ Batman performances traces his run across DC animation. More importantly, he has never been coy about the live-action possibility. Discussing the challenge of following so many acclaimed Batmen, he said (via The Direct) he would “probably have to lean heavily on Gunn and whoever’s directing” to develop something audiences had not already seen.
FandomWire has also previously covered Ackles’ willingness to become the DCU Batman, noting that his animated experience gives him an unusual head start over many fancast contenders. The interest has not cooled. At a Supernatural convention in January, Ackles again entertained returning to his DC character when the possibility came up alongside Misha Collins. ComingSoon reported their remarks. There is also a practical case for Ackles. The Brave and the Bold introduces Damian Wayne, so the DCU needs an established Batman with plenty of history (via TheWrap). At 48, Ackles comfortably fits that seasoned Bruce Wayne.
Following James Gunn on Instagram Has Sparked This Rumor Before
image by Gage Skidmore, licensed under CC BY- SA 2.0, via Wikimedia CommonsJensen Ackles is hardly the first actor whose Instagram activity has excited DC fans. Grant Gustin also followed James Gunn, and Gunn’s follow-back quickly sparked DCU speculation. Gunn dismantled that theory himself (via SuperHeroHype):
Grant was following me and I like him as an actor so we chatted a bit and I followed him back. Very simple!
Gustin never landed a confirmed DCU role, which should cool the Ackles speculation a little. Glen Powell sparked similar Batman rumors after following Gunn and Andy Muschietti in 2024, but no casting followed. ComicBookMovie documented the social-media activity at the time. Where things become more interesting is Gunn’s habit of noticing actors long before their casting becomes public. Gunn had Milly Alcock in mind for Supergirl over a year before her casting after seeing her on House of the Dragon. She still earned the role through auditions and screen tests, but his interest came much earlier. ABC News and The Motion Picture Association documented the process.
Aaron Pierre had also caught Gunn’s attention years before Lanterns, with Gunn previously considering him for Adam Warlock. David Corenswet was another early favorite, as Gunn had seen him in Pearl and later called him “the guy to beat” for Superman. That history makes the Ackles follow interesting, but hardly conclusive. Following Gunn guarantees nothing, although catching his attention sometimes leads somewhere. For now, the DCU still has no confirmed Batman.
Gunn recently insisted that The Brave and the Bold remains in development and is “in no way on hold,” while Christina Hodson works on the screenplay. ComingSoon reported his latest development update. So, no, Ackles hasn’t won the cape by tapping ‘Follow.’ Still, his Batman experience, age, and interest in the role make the rumor fun without making it fact. Would you cast Ackles as Bruce Wayne?
