However, few moments capture the brothers’ determination quite like October 3. In the anime series, it’s the day when the Elric Brothers leave their childhood behind after burning their home and set out on the journey that will define their lives. What starts out as a simple date turns out to be one of the most emotional reminders of everything the brothers went through.

Edward and Alphonse Burn Their Childhood Home Before Leaving Resembool

After the brothers lost their mother, Trisha Elric, Edward and Alphonse try their best to bring her back through the forbidden alchemy, human transmutation. However, their experiment goes horribly wrong. Edward loses his left leg while Alphonse loses his entire body. In a desperate attempt to save his brother’s soul, Edward also sacrifices his right arm to bind his brother’s soul to an armor suit.

That particular experiment changed the Elric brothers’ lives. They leave home and join the military. Edward later becomes a State Alchemist, hoping he’ll get the resources to recover what they’ve lost. However, before they leave their hometown, Resembool, Edward and Alphonse decide to burn their childhood home on October 3.

Burning the house down wasn’t an act of destruction, though. That house was tied to their childhood, the memories of their mother, and, of course, the life they can’t return to. By burning it down, the brothers make a striking decision to leave that painful part of their lives and take on a new journey.

For the characters who’ve lost everything, this moment makes their departure from Resembool more impactful. They are not just leaving home for the Philosopher’s Stone; they are also accepting the fact that their old lives are over. This very moment adds an emotional depth that is simply hard to ignore, making it one of the best episodes in the series.

“Don’t Forget 3. Oct. 11” Becomes a Reminder of the Elric Brothers’ Promise

Before leaving their hometown, Edward writes “Don’t Forget 3. Oct. 11” inside his pocket watch. The date became a striking reminder of the decision the brothers made. Not only that, but the date also reminds Edward and Alphonse of the promise, which motivates them to move forward.

The pocket watch itself is important to Edward because it represents his life as a State Alchemist. It also reminds Edward that this journey is important to recover Alphonse’s body. That promise alone gives October 3 a deeper meaning in the Elric Brothers’ lives.

The date is meaningful because it reminds not only the Elric Brothers but also fans how to leave their traumatic past behind. It doesn’t simply represent a major revelation or a major battle. Instead, it captures the emotional foundation of Edward and Alphonse’s entire journey.

What’s impressive is that Fullmetal Alchemist‘s focus on October 3 doesn’t ever feel forceful or forgettable. Every time the show brings back October 3, you instantly get a flashback of the brothers’ heartbreaking childhood. It’s quite amazing how Fullmetal Alchemist packs so much emotion and depth into a single date, which, honestly, is quite rare to see. That is why October 3 has always held a special place in the heart of every Fullmetal Alchemist fan, establishing it as one of the best anime series.
