Denzel Washington’s 109-Minute Intense Thriller Officially Takes Over Netflix Ahead of Sequel

Ahead of the release of The Equalizer 4 (which remains unconfirmed), Denzel Washington’s The Equalizer 3 has taken over Netflix in the top 10. As per a report by Flix Patrol, the Denzel Washington thriller is #6 on the list of top 10 movies on Netflix as of October 3, 2026.

In fact, the movie has been trending in the #1 and #2 spots in several countries on 2nd and 3rd October. The trending spots came before The Equalizer 4 and 5 were confirmed by Denzel Washington. Although still in development, fans were overjoyed to hear that the trilogy, which was supposed to end, has been granted two additional movies starring Denzel Washington.

The Equalizer 3 was released back in 2023. With the film being the third part of the trilogy, fans (and director Antoine Fuqua) alleged that this would mark the end of Denzel Washington’s Robert McCall. However, back in 2024, Washington confirmed to Esquire that two additional movies in the franchise had been confirmed to be in development.

Per his talk, Washington had simply said he “would do another Equalizer, and we’re doing four and five”. The actor further revealed that the news has fans overjoyed and that “people love those daggone Equalizers.”

But I’ve come to realize that the Equalizer films are for me, too, because they’re for the people. They want me to go get the bad guys. ‘We can’t get them, so you go get them.’ And I say, Okay, I’ll get them! Just wait right there. I’ll be right back!

Although The Equalizer 4 and 5 have been confirmed, it seems that director Antoine Fuqua and screenwriter Richard Wenk might want to showcase how Robert McCall becomes… Robert McCall.

Why We Think The Equalizer 4 Might Be Denzel Washington’s Prequel

The Equalizer 3 ended with Robert McCall settling into a new life in Altamonte after he was nursed back to health following a gunshot wound. At the end of The Equalizer 3, McCall sheds his traumas and emerges as a human unafraid of his past.

To tell the truth, it is quite the perfect way to end an iconic franchise as Denzel Washington’s. Naturally, with The Equalizer 4 and 5 in development, director Antoine Fuqua teased (via MovieWeb) that he thought about a prequel starring a de-aged Denzel Washington.

I definitely thought about it a lot. “Especially now with the new technology and the AI and all of that kind of stuff… Is there a story to be told about how [McCall] became this person — the younger version. I’ve had that conversation with [‘Equalizer’ screenwriter] Richard Wenk quite a bit.

Well, it would be interesting to see a de-aged Washington who becomes Robert McCall through a series of interesting events that we haven’t seen before. However, no official plot details have been revealed about what the upcoming movies have in store for us.
