Black Frieza beat Ultra Instinct Goku, and the Dragon Ball Super anime now has an official road leading toward him. In the manga, Frieza’s black form killed Gas with one attack, then knocked out True Ultra Instinct Goku and Ultra Ego Vegeta with a single strike each.
Toei confirmed the sequel, Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol, on January 25, 2026, though the Granolah Saga hasn’t been announced for animation yet; we can hope the anime intends to finish the rest of the work Toriyama left behind. Here’s what is actually confirmed right now, what isn’t, and what that means for Ultra Instinct’s spot at the top.
Black Frieza Already Flattened Ultra Instinct Goku in One Hit
Black Frieza from Dragon Ball Super | Credits: ShueishaLet’s start with what actually happened: In Dragon Ball Super Chapter 87, “The Universe’s Strongest Appears,” Goku and Vegeta were deep into a brutal fight against Gas on Planet Cereal. Gas had been wished into the strongest fighter in Universe 7, and he was pushing both Saiyans to their limits. Then Frieza showed up, and it ended fast. One attack killed Gas, the same Gas that Goku and Vegeta hadn’t been able to finish.
Frieza didn’t stop there; he told the Saiyans he’d found a Hyperbolic Time Chamber on a planet he conquered and spent ten years of training time inside it. Then he introduced Black Frieza and hit True Ultra Instinct Goku and Ultra Ego Vegeta in the stomach, one strike each. Both dropped. Ultra Instinct is supposed to react before Goku even thinks, and it still didn’t help him at all. Vegeta’s Ultra Ego, built on the Gods of Destruction’s own technique, didn’t save him either.
Furthermore, according to V-Jump’s official description, Black Frieza’s power is beyond measurement, somewhere close to the Gods of Destruction. He is also superior to Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Broly, and Piccolo at their best. When Goku asked Whis if Frieza might be the universe’s strongest, Whis only said maybe. That’s not exactly a yes, but coming from Whis, it’s not nothing either.
To be fair, Goku had been fighting nonstop before Frieza arrived, so he wasn’t fresh. Still, Frieza handled both of them at once, and it didn’t look like he strained himself. For a villain who once complained about losing to Saiyans, that’s quite the turnaround, honestly. It also leaves a big question hanging over Goku’s strongest form.
How the Dragon Ball Super Anime Is Building Toward Black Frieza
Black Frieza is already canon because he’s in the Dragon Ball Super manga by Akira Toriyama and Toyotarou. What’s new is that the anime is coming back. At Dragon Ball Genkidamatsuri on January 25, 2026, the 40th anniversary event in Japan, Toei Animation announced Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol, with Dragon Ball executive producer Akio Iyoku on stage. It adapts the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga, where Goku and Vegeta take on the planet-eater Moro, and it picks up where the Universe Survival arc left off. No release date has been announced.
The Granolah the Survivor Saga comes after Moro in the story, and it isn’t part of any official anime announcement yet. Fans call all of this Dragon Ball Super 2, but that’s a nickname, not an official title. So Black Frieza’s anime debut feels likely since the story is heading that way, but nobody has put a date on it.
A remake is arriving first, too. Dragon Ball Super: Beerus premieres on Fuji TV on October 11. Iyoku has described it as an enhanced edition of the original anime, with a reconstructed story and new and redrawn cuts. Frieza’s power-up wasn’t a total shock, either. Back in Dragon Ball Super: Broly, Vegeta warned Goku that Frieza could return with a new form, and that fear is why he kept training. In a January 2023 Weekly Dragon Ball News broadcast (via the official site), Toyotarou explained the color choice: black is the one shade that could sit above gold. He joked it’s like a black credit card outranking a gold one.
