Spoiler Alert !!!
This article discusses major events in Lanterns Episode 8, Dirt and Stars.
Lanterns Episode 8, which is the season finale and hopefully not the series finale, had plenty to resolve. This includes Hal Jordan’s (Kyle Chandler) murder and John Stewart’s (Aaron Pierre) future as a Green Lantern. But Lanterns finale also finds room for a surprisingly ordinary addition to the DCU. Nebraska Cornhuskers head coach Matt Rhule appears in the finale. A bit weird to see a familiar face from college football into a universe populated by alien peacekeepers and their dangerous predecessors. Good weird, though.
Rhule’s appearance comes through Noah Macon’s football storyline. It reaches a happier conclusion than the teenager initially expects. It’s an amusing discovery for viewers who recognize the coach. It is also a fitting choice and a payoff for a series that has repeatedly worked Nebraska’s sporting culture into its story.
Matt Rhule Makes Surprise DCU Debut In Lanterns
Rhule appears as himself in the finale’s football sequence. He is first seen in the audience and then with Noah (Shea Pritchard). Noah is choosing to attend the University of Nebraska after his team wins its championship game. So, that means a version of the real Cornhuskers coach now exists in this world. College football recruiting apparently continues even when intergalactic law enforcement has problems to sort out.
For viewers unfamiliar with American football, Rhule has led Nebraska since 2023. Before arriving in Lincoln, he coached the NFL’s Carolina Panthers and held head coaching positions at Temple and Baylor.
The scene also arrives at a crucial point for Noah. Earlier, he tells John that he is frightened of his own ambitions (since he is a Manhunter and is programmed to destroy any and every threat to his person). He imagines a future in which football could help him accumulate influence. This will eventually lead him into politics.
He becomes so afraid of that possibility that he asks John to kill him after the game, something his grandmother Zoe Macon (Poorna Jagannathan) also did (we learnt she manipulated John into killing her in Lanterns Episode 5). This time, John makes a different choice. He ultimately chooses to give him another chance. He and Hal believe he has conscience and a sense of morality thanks to Kerry’s loving upbringing. There are reason to hope. But if he ever strays from the path of good, John is ready to put him down. And that is the reason he becomes the Green Lantern.
Seen in that context, Noah’s Nebraska decision carries some emotional weight. For the moment, he gets to be a teenager celebrating with his family and looking forward to college. Rhule’s appearance gives that possibility a recognizable face. The finale leaves Noah’s future uncertain, but allows him to imagine having one.
Lanterns Had Been Referencing Nebraska Football All Season
Hal Jordan name-dropped many important figures from Nebraska football history while interrogating the alien in episode 1 | Credits: DCU StudiosThe Cornhuskers connection predates Rhule’s arrival and Lanterns Episode 8. The series had already included Nebraska football references. Hal mentioned celebrated former coach Tom Osborne while interrogating the alien in Lanterns Episode 1. Football also weirdly occupies an uncomfortable place in the show’s central mystery.
Hal’s body is discovered in the stands at Rushville’s football field. By the finale, the game brings the community together while John and Kerry confront the truth about his death. We learn it was Kerry who shot Hal to death, fearing for her son’s life. But the murder was not premeditated. The same setting accommodates both a town’s celebration and its most painful secrets.
There’s another football connection hovering over these scenes: Chandler famously played Coach Eric Taylor in Friday Night Lights. That history adds some extra context to a series now featuring an actual college coach.
The show has throughout its season 1 focused on being grounded even though there were larger cosmic storytelling in the backdrop. In Lanterns Episode 8, too, Rushville has people worrying about football prospects even as John worries about a potential extraterrestrial threat. Those concerns happen to converge in Noah.
As of October 5, Lanterns has a 92% Tomatometer score.
