The Naruto live-action movie is slowly starting to reveal what fans can expect from its story. While the project has been in development for years, a new plot synopsis and another casting call have raised some interesting questions about the movie’s timeline and its version of Team 7.
The biggest surprise is that the story is described as taking place in an “alternate universe.” At the same time, the movie will reportedly follow Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha, and Sakura Haruno on their “first mission”, which could bring one of the manga’s most important early stories to the big screen.
Naruto Live-Action Movie Reportedly Adapts Naruto’s “First Mission”
According to the movie’s reported plot synopsis (via Knight Edge Media), the story of the upcoming live-action movie will follow Naruto as a talented but troublesome young ninja. He is assigned to his first mission alongside Sasuke and Sakura, but the job quickly turns into something much more dangerous than expected.
The synopsis also says Naruto will have to face his inner demons, including the literal demon that is connected to his power. This clearly points toward the Nine-Tailed Fox sealed inside Naruto, one of the most important parts of his character. However, the synopsis doesn’t say exactly what this “first mission” will be. In the original story, Team 7’s first major mission outside the Hidden Leaf Village was the Land of Waves arc.
That story saw Team 7 protect the bridge builder Tazuna. The mission soon became a serious battle against Zabuza Momochi and Haku. It also gave Naruto his first real taste of how dangerous the ninja world could be. Because of this, the Land of Waves arc would make sense as the starting point for the movie. It has action, emotional moments, strong villains, enough material and a proper ending to introduce the main characters without making the story too complicated.
The phrase “alternate universe” in the synopsis is also worth looking at closely. It may simply be a way for the production to describe the fictional world of Naruto for those who aren’t familiar with the original manga or anime. After all, the story takes place in a world with its own nations, technology, ninja system, and chakra-based abilities, rather than modern-day Earth.
At the same time, the wording could also hint that the movie will have its own continuity. A live-action adaptation doesn’t have to follow the manga chapter by chapter, especially when a long story needs to fit into a single movie. This could give Destin Daniel Cretton room to combine storylines, change character introductions, or move events around while keeping the main ideas of Kishimoto’s story.
Naruto Live-Action Movie Release Date and Cast: What We Know So Far

Back in July, an announcement was made about the official launch of the global casting search for the three young shinobi of Team 7 (via the official website). Now, a second casting call has been reportedly shared for 13- to 15-year-old actors to play Naruto and Sakura.
The notice asks for athletic performers, with experience in martial arts, dance, gymnastics, movement, or parkour considered a plus. This could mean the movie is starting with the younger versions of Naruto and Sakura. Meanwhile, the lack of a similar second casting call for Sasuke also makes the situation more interesting, which suggests the role may either already be cast or is being handled through a separate, private agency search.
Production notices cite a commitment window from January through August 2027, which aligns with media reports that filming is expected to begin in the UK early next year. However, Lionsgate has not announced an official theatrical release date as of now.
There are also a few things that have already been confirmed about the movie. Naruto creator Masashi Kishimoto is involved with the project, and Destin Daniel Cretton will direct the movie for Lionsgate. This gives the film a strong creative connection to the original series while still leaving plenty of room for Cretton to put his own spin on the story.
So now the big question: Could the Naruto live-action movie’s first mission really be the Land of Waves or a new version of the story? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
