An obituary published on the Back to the Futurewebsite said Tolkan died “peacefully.”

No cause of death was given.

Tolkan served in navy before becoming actor

Originally from Michigan, Tolkan grew up in Chicago after his parents divorced and ended up in Tucson, Ariz., where he graduated from Amphitheater High School in 1949, People reported.

Tolkan went on to serve in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and moved to New York City after his duties ended. He was bit by the acting bug while in NYC, studying the craft with both Stella Adler and Lee Strasberg’s acting studios.

The actor was a member of the original ensemble cast of “Glengarry Glen Ross” on Broadway.

He soon turned his career to the silver screen, appearing in several films directed by Sidney Lumet, including Sperico in 1973, Prince of the City in 1981 and Family Business in 1989.

Notable roles

The actor is probably best known for his role as Gerald Strickland, the bow tie-wearing vice principal in Back to the Future.

“You got a real attitude problem, McFly,” Tolkan’s character says to Michael J. Fox’s Marty McFly in the 1985 film. “You’re a slacker. You remind me of your father when he went here. He was a slacker, too.”

Tolken was also known for playing officer Tom “Stinger” Jardian in Top Gun. Towards the end of the film, Jardian asks Tom Cruise’s character, Capt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, about his choice of future duty, to which Mitchell states he wants to be a Top Gun instructor.

“God help us,” Tolkan’s character replies.

Tolkan is survived by his wife of 54 years, Parmelee Welles.
