Harington officially takes over the mantle of Gilderoy Lockhart after Nicholas Hoult’s exit, the charismatic, award-winning author and notoriously incompetent Defense Against the Dark Arts professor. Originally portrayed with unforgettable comedic flair by Sir Kenneth Branagh in the 2002 film adaptation, Lockhart requires an actor capable of balancing effortless charm, dazzling vanity, and subtle comedic timing.

Stepping into Lockhart’s gilded wardrobe is not entirely uncharted territory for Harington. The British actor tackled the flamboyant professor just months ago in Audible’s full-cast production, giving him a head start on capturing the wizard’s dazzling vanity and self-absorbed charm.

During promotional interviews for that audio project, he reflected on growing up alongside the franchise, having shared the exact age of the Boy Who Lived when the debut novel first hit shelves. It was a really simple yes, because I love the character. As far as cameos in a series go, you don’t get much more entertaining and fun to do as an actor than Gilderoy Lockhart. It was a no-brainer.

Bringing that lifelong affinity for the source material to live-action television allows Harington to lean into a distinct comedic space rarely seen during his brooding days in Westeros or the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
