Bleach TYBW: What Is Blood Chains Ichigo? Everything We Know About Ichigo’s New Bankai

Bleach TYBW has finally given Ichigo Kurosaki a form manga readers never got to see. Part 4 Episode 5, “Defend You”, introduces Blood Chains Ichigo, an entirely new transformation created, designed, and named by Tite Kubo for the anime.

It appears when Ichigo awakens his dormant Hollow blood, enters a half-Hollowfied state, and releases Bankai against Yhwach. With its two horns, blood-like chains, and overwhelming Reiatsu, the form looks like a terrifying evolution of Ichigo’s Hollow powers. But what exactly is Blood Chains Ichigo, and what can his new Bankai actually do?

Bleach TYBW Introduces Ichigo’s Blood Chains Bankai Form

Blood Chains Ichigo is the name given to Ichigo Kurosaki’s new form in Bleach TYBW Part 4 Episode 5. The official description explains that Ichigo awakens the Hollow blood sleeping inside him and undergoes half-Hollowfication before activating Bankai. His Zanpakuto transforms alongside him, creating what the official material describes as his ultimate form. Crucially, this is not a transformation from the original manga. Kubo personally drew the character design and named the form for the anime, making it one of the most significant anime-original additions to the final battle.

The appearance immediately brings back memories of Ichigo’s most frightening Hollow form. Two horns grow from his head, recalling the complete Hollowfication he experienced during his battle with Ulquiorra. However, Ichigo does not wear the familiar Hollow mask this time. Instead, the Hollow characteristics are incorporated directly into his body while blood-like Reiatsu chains emerge around his neck, hands, and feet. It makes the transformation feel strangely familiar while still looking like something Ichigo has never achieved before.

The form is not just a visual callback, either. Against Yhwach, who has absorbed the Soul King, Ichigo reaches a new level of spiritual pressure, physical ability, and reaction speed. His blood chains can also be controlled during battle, allowing him to defend himself against Yhwach’s attacks. The transformation gives Ichigo an enormous boost while letting his Hollow power become part of his Bankai rather than something he has to suppress.

What Makes Ichigo’s New Bankai Different From His Old Forms?

What makes Blood Chains Ichigo especially exciting is the way it brings together different parts of Ichigo’s history. His horns recall his complete Hollow form, while the chains evoke the visual language associated with his earlier transformations. Yet this time, Ichigo is not losing control. He awakens his Hollow blood himself and immediately combines that power with Bankai, showing just how far his understanding of his own abilities has come.

The form also comes with some impressive abilities. Ichigo Kurosaki can manipulate the Reiatsu chains around his body, using them to block Yhwach’s attacks and control the battlefield. He also produces multiple copies of himself through his Reiatsu and unleashes enormous Getsuga Tensho attacks during the confrontation. These abilities transform feel much more substantial than a simple power-up, although the anime has yet to explain every aspect of what this new state can ultimately do.

There is also an important distinction fans should keep in mind: Blood Chains Ichigo should not automatically be treated as a completely separate Bankai. The official material describes it as the form Ichigo enters when he releases Bankai while half-Hollowfied, with his Zanpakuto transforming alongside him. It therefore appears to be a particular state of Ichigo’s Bankai rather than proof that he suddenly possesses an entirely different Bankai.

Most importantly, Blood Chains Ichigo is now part of the anime’s expanded version of the Thousand-Year Blood War. Kubo’s direct involvement gives the transformation considerably more weight than a routine anime-original addition, even though it was absent from the manga. For longtime fans, it is a fitting evolution of Ichigo’s journey: the terrifying Hollow power that once threatened to consume him is now fighting alongside every other part of who he is.
