Avengers: Doomsday Directors Officially Confirm ‘New Incarnation of Loki’

Avengers: Doomsday directors Anthony Russo and Joe Russo officially confirmed and explained Loki’s appearance and interruption of Steve and Peggy’s dance during the post-credit scene in Avengers Endgame: Encore. The directors revealed that they had no intention of ruining Steve and Peggy Carter’s perfect end, but revealed good news with it.

During an interview with Empire Online, the directors were asked about Loki’s end at the finale of Loki season 3, when he became the God of Stories. With Loki merging with Yggdrasil (the Sacred Timeline), the directors had no choice but to answer how Loki showed up at Steve and Peggy’s door in the post-credit scene.

I mean, look, the God of Mischief proves to be the God of Mischief. Loki’s one of the most fascinating characters, and he’s had so many incarnations. One of the delights of Doomsday is, you’re going to get a new incarnation of that character.

Well, there has been no other information on who or what this new incarnation of Loki is. However, what we do know is that it was a complete experiment for Anthony and Joe Russo to ruin Captain America’s perfect ending by revisiting that moment in Avengers Endgame: Encore.

The Russo Brothers Genuinely Thought Captain America Would Not Return

Talking candidly about the moment, the directors revealed that when they wrote the ending for Steve and Peggy Carter, they genuinely treated it as the perfect ending. However, when the chance came, they decided to experiment with the idea instead. They had set the limitation on themselves in order to make the most of Avengers: Endgame.

Speaking of the moment when Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter are simply dancing and enjoying their time, Joe and Anthony Russo wanted to think differently for that particular scene.

We wanted to give ourselves a different lens to look at these characters through. And so we were very committed to it being an ending. It was many years later before the idea – this idea, that we actually committed to – came up, on how to move past that moment.

Anthony Russo continued,

A big motivation for releasing Avengers: Endgame Encore is the idea that, now we’re looking back at that movie thinking about going forward, instead of not thinking about going forward.

Well, although the new variant of Loki is something to look forward to, it seems that Joe and Anthony Russo’s comments are about a new incarnation of Loki. One that has been in the rumors and theories for far too long.

Avengers: Doomsday Directors’ Talks Fuel Rumored Loki Theory

Well, it has long been alleged that Steve Rogers’ Captain America had accidentally created a timeline that gave birth to Doom. However, another speculation before Steve Rogers’ theory stems from the story of Kang the Conqueror. Kang wanted to destroy the Sacred Timeline and ensure that the Multiverse falls under his rule.

With Loki becoming the God of Stories, he essentially holds the key to the Sacred Timeline, something that Kang wants to destroy. Well, with Jonathan Majors out of the picture, it seems that the task of destroying the Sacred Timeline falls into the hands of Doctor Doom.

It is speculated that Doom will try to kill Loki and destroy the Sacred Timeline. Loki could potentially escape the ill fate and bring out a new incarnation that may help save his life. After escaping Doom’s destruction, he would realize that Doom was born because of Captain America’s timeline shift, which could potentially explain Loki interrupting Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter’s dance at the end of Avengers Endgame: Encore.

Of course, this remains just a theory, and all will be released in theaters when Avengers: Doomsday releases.
