Witch Hat Atelier: How Old Are Agott, Coco, Qifrey and Others in the Anime?

Because of the master-apprentice system, the characters in the Witch Hat Atelier anime fall into varied age categories. Furthermore, in the anime, it’s hard to tell how old the characters are. For example, while according to the plot, Olruggio and Qifrey should be of similar age, they also look like they have a huge age gap.

This applies to the apprentices as well, where Agott appears to be the oldest, and Richeh appears to be the youngest. However, that may not be the case. Let’s dive into everything we know about the ages of all characters that we’ve seen so far in the anime.

How Old Are the Apprentice Witches in Witch Hat Atelier?

The apprentices – Coco, Agott, Tetia, and Richeh – are all between 10 and 12 years old. This specific age range was confirmed by creator Kamome Shirahama during a 2021 Twitter Space, a detail widely documented in character breakdowns by outlets like Comic Basics.

Agott appears to be the oldest among all apprentices, given her experience with magic. According to archived translations of Shirahama’s commentary documented by @WitchHatUpdates on Twitter/X, she is also Qifrey’s first student. This fact aligns with her introducing herself as Qifrey’s “No. 1” student in Chapter 11 of the manga.

Tartah, an apprentice working under the apothecary Eunie, likely falls into this exact age bracket. Having young apprentices increased the vulnerability, as it emphasized the harsh reality of the magic system of Witch Hat Atelier, where simple mistakes can cause big tragedies. For example, Coco clearly didn’t know what she was doing when she ended up petrifying her mother, as she is but a child.

How Old Are the Adult Characters in Witch Hat Atelier?

During the 2021 broadcast (The Direct) by Kamome Shirahama, she also revealed that Qifrey, the master of the atelier, and Olruggio, the watchful eye, are both in their late twenties to early thirties.

Alaria, a Pointed Cap Witch, fits into a similar age group. The ages of other major adult characters, however, are not given an exact number. But we can try to speculate through the roles and ranks in the story. Luluci and Easthies are from the Knights Moralis, a magical force that erases the memories of outsiders if they discover the secret of magic, and hunt down the brimmed caps.

Their jobs, along with those of other members, must demand years of training and special qualifications even after becoming a witch. Hence, they should be no younger than early thirties. Furthermore, the way Qifrey talked to them shows that there must not be a huge age difference.

The Oldest Witches and the Ageless Villains

Beldaruit, one of the Three Wise Ones, is clearly a senior citizen. He uses a magical walking chair to move around, probably because of his advanced age and physical limits. His age remains unstated, but his white hair and physical frailty place him in his sixties or seventies. This age would fit, considering that he was the mentor of Qifrey himself.

On the other hand, there are Brimmed Caps. Iguin, one of the most significant and strongest Brimmed Caps, hides its face, making it near impossible to guess the age. But considering how they practice forbidden magic that alters the human body, they might be much older than any character, or they might simply be regular adults.
