Spoiler Alert !!!
Spoiler Warning for George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood
Team Black is about to get battle-ready in House of the Dragon Season 3. With new dragons emerging and key players gearing up for the deadliest civil war, the Black Valyrians of Team Black will play significant parts that will shape the history of Westeros.
From noble dragonriders to sailors and dragonseeds, every player has a role to perform in the coming war. However, not all of their storylines in Season 3 will carry the same weight. Here’s every Black Valyrian in the upcoming instalment ranked by just how important they’ll be to the plot.
5 Baela Targaryen Continues to Fight For the Blacks
Bethany Antonia in House of the Dragon / Credits: HBOBaela Targaryen remains one of Team Black’s most trustworthy players. Not only did Rhaenyra depend on her to patrol the skies, but she has also become a source of stability for Jace as he struggles with the pressures of being an heir. As a skilled dragonrider, Baela continues to be an important piece of the Black war effort.
Still, Season 3 will likely keep Baela in the background. She may be given tasks from time to time, but with the story focusing on major battles and the rise of the dragonseeds, Baela is expected to remain a strong supporting presence rather than a central figure.
Her biggest moment is likely still ahead. We do know that Baela will clash with Aegon II and Sunfyre during the Fall of Dragonstone, a showdown that could close out Season 3 or kick off the final season.
4 Rhaena Targaryen Appears to Join Battle on Sheepstealer’s Back
Rhaena Targaryen stepping into the war on Sheepstealer marks a major turning point for her character in the Dance of the Dragons. Long seen as the overlooked daughter of Daemon and Laena, she’s set to claim her own dragon in Season 3.
The official final trailer seemingly teased her surprise appearance during the Battle of the Gullet, although this remains speculation. In the first few seconds of the clip, a mysterious dragon appears and starts burning ships.
Whether this is Rhaena and Sheepstealer is still unclear, but Season 2 already hinted that she may eventually claim the wild dragon. This is a massive departure from the source material, although it’s a huge turning point in Rhaena’s otherwise quiet storyline.
3 Alyn of Hull Takes His Place in the Velaryon Fleet
Abubakar Salim in House of the Dragon / Credits: HBODespite his complicated relationship with Corlys, Alyn of Hull continues to help out the Lord of the Tides, especially with getting his ship ready for battle. As teased in the final moments of Season 2, Alyn will now step into the Velaryon fleet as a legitimate force in the war at sea. As a skilled sailor, he proves to be a natural fit for the blockade and any upcoming naval clashes.
While he is not a major political player, his role is very crucial in executing the Blacks’ maritime strategy. The blockade in the Gullet has long been an effective way to shut down all seaborne trade to and from King’s Landing, and Alyn’s efforts in maintaining it have been essential to sustaining the Blacks’ control on the capital.
The series has already streamlined Alyn’s arc, though here’s to hoping it won’t skip the part where he and his brother are legitimized after proving their worth in the war.
2 Addam of Hull and Seasmoke Finally Ride Into Battle
Clinton Liberty and Seasmoke in House of the Dragon / Credits: HBOAddam of Hull has already claimed Seasmoke, but he has yet to demonstrate if he is a worthy dragonrider in the new season. Joining the other dragonseeds, he will be playing a huge role in fighting for the Blacks and Rhaenyra’s claim to the throne.
In the Season 2 finale, Addam is seen dressed for battle. We know from the lore that he would demonstrate bravery and skill during the Battle of the Gullet and that he would be a staunch defender of the Blacks, but because of Hugh Hammer and Ulf the White’s treachery, many would question his loyalty.
While this event occurs during the Second Battle of Tumbleton, the show will likely condense the timeline and include this conflict as soon as the Two Betrayers are found out. Addam is expected to have more screen time in Season 3 because of his new role as a dragonrider.
1 Corlys Velaryon Leads Naval Forces in the Battle of the Gullet
Corlys Velaryon plays the most important role among the Black Valyrians, with his plot being the most relevant in Season 3 since he’s the admiral of the Velaryon fleet, one of the strongest naval forces in Westeros. However, after the massive destruction in the wake of the Battle of the Gullet, the lore revealed that many people hated Rhaenyra.
Throughout the Dance of the Dragons, Corlys supported her claim and continues to do so even though he’s increasingly aware that her decisions are becoming more questionable and politically costly for the Black cause.
Based on the latest trailer, Corlys seems to express doubts about how Rhaenyra is handling the situation. His judgment will lend the plot a sense of internal tension within the Black faction, making Season 3 even more dramatic and exciting.
