Spoiler Alert !!!
Spoiler Warning for George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood
House of the Dragon unveiled its official final trailer, and we’re treated to several Easter eggs and major story hints to look forward to in Season 3. From epic battles, shocking character deaths, and subtle nods to events straight from the pages of Fire & Blood, the new season won’t be short of exciting spectacles and heartbreaking losses.
In this list, we’ll break down five major details featured in the latest trailer. While some of these moments were prominently showcased, others appeared for only a brief second and may have been easy for fans to miss. Nonetheless, they are just as significant to the story and have major implications for the events of Season 3.
1 The Dragon Egg Scene Between Alys Rivers and Aemond
This is one of the blink-and-you-will-miss-it moments in the House of the Dragon Season 3 trailer. In a split second, we see what appears to be Alys Rivers and Aemond Targaryen holding a dragon egg.
In George R.R. Martin’s story, Aemond recaptures Harrenhal just as Rhaenyra seized King’s Landing. The Prince Regent then ordered the deaths of Ser Simon Strong and his kin, but spared Alys Rivers. She became Aemond’s lover instead.
Whether the series will follow this storyline remains unclear, though Aemond is expected to spend a significant amount of time at Harrenhal. There’s a splatter of blood as well in the dragon egg, which could mean it may have been taken by force. The scene suggests Aemond might be giving it to Alys, but his reason for doing so is yet to be unveiled in the show.
The book reveals that Alys becomes pregnant with Aemond’s child. During the reign of Rhaenyra’s son, King Aegon III, Alys later claims that her son is the true heir to the Iron Throne. With that in mind, it’s possible the dragon egg is intended for their unborn child.
2 Battle of the Gullet: The Naval War Fans Have Been Waiting For
One of the biggest moments in the trailer is the long-awaited glimpse of the Battle of the Gullet. The brief shots of burning ships and dragons circling above the sea suggest the Velaryon fleet is about to face a devastating ambush.
In the lore, the Blacks will face a massive loss not only in their naval force but also in a major Targaryen member. Jace and Vermax will meet their untimely deaths at the hands of the Triarchy.
There is a brief scene towards the end of the trailer where the young prince is flying too low near the burning ships, and this is most likely the moment where tragedy strikes. While the show has taken some creative liberties, the outcome of the naval clash will likely remain faithful to the source material. That said, both the Blacks and the Greens will suffer significant losses, though the impact is expected to be felt more heavily on Rhaenyra’s side.
3 The War’s Bloodiest Betrayal Begins At Tumbleton
Right behind the Battle of the Gullet, the First Battle of Tumbleton is the next most-anticipated conflict during the Dance of the Dragons. Ormund Hightower and the Green army were seen gearing up for the fight, with Tessarion and Daeron in the background as well, although we have yet to see Alicent’s younger son when he makes his official appearance in Season 3.
Several key events we can expect in this battle include thousands of Blacks army fighting against the Greens, with Roderick Dustin of the Winter Wolves managing to slay Ormund. The betrayal of the dragonseeds, Hugh Hammer, and Ulf the White, also takes place here, where they ended up burning the whole of Tumbleton.
The battle will most likely serve as the climax of the story, as it unfolds before the Fall of Dragonstone, which is speculated to be the concluding event of Season 3. This is a major victory for the Greens despite significant casualties; however, this is also just the beginning of a series of wars, as another battle at Tumbleton is expected to unfold in Season 4.
4 The Defeat That Sends Rhaenyra Into A Rage
In one key scene in the trailer, Rhaenyra spirals down and says, “Have you not betrayed your queen? Bring Aegon the Usurper to me.” There are tons of possible explanations as to why the Black queen is seething in fury here.
Alicent promised her unchallenged passage to King’s Landing, and Rhaenyra expected to claim the Iron Throne from Aegon without resistance. However, with Larys Strong smuggling the king out of King’s Landing, Rhaenyra is left in a far more precarious position. She might be suspecting that someone on her council was a snitch.
Since it is unclear which timeline her meltdown occurred, it is likely that her frustration was brought about by several losses and defeats that the Blacks had endured, from the loss of her son to the betrayal of the dragonseeds. At one point in the trailer, Corlys Velaryon says the people do not feel safe under Rhaenyra’s takeover. As seen in the trailer, the population didn’t seem quite happy to welcome the queen.
5 The Winter Wolves March South & Join The Fight
Another interesting Easter egg in the final trailer is the introduction of the Winter Wolves. Lord Cregan Stark promised Jacaerys 2,000 greybeards who will join and fight for the Blacks, which we can clearly expect to see during the Fishfeed, the Butcher’s Ball, and the First Battle of Tumbleton.
It seems like the aged Northern warriors will have a significant amount of screen time in Season 3, with the trailer strongly implying that the Winter Wolves are not just a passing mention but a major fighting force in the coming conflict.
Following Jace and Cregan’s agreement, this is the first time we’ll see the Targaryens work with the Northern forces in House of the Dragon. As much as fans wish to see more of House Stark in the series, we will most likely get that in Season 4 in the aftermath of the Dance of the Dragons.
