Whalefall: Release Date, Plot, Cast, and Everything We Know

Whalefall is set to make the ocean scary all over again. The survival thriller follows a young scuba diver who gets swallowed alive by a giant sperm whale and has to find a way out before his air runs out. It is as wild as it sounds, and the trailers have already turned it into one of the most talked-about films of the fall.

Brian Duffield, the filmmaker behind No One Will Save You, is directing. He adapted the film from Daniel Kraus’ 2023 novel of the same name, with Kraus co-writing the script. The film comes from 20th Century Studios and Imagine Entertainment, with Brian Grazer and Ron Howard among the producers.

Whalefall Release Date: When Is It Arriving in Theaters?

Mark your calendars, because Whalefall swims into theaters nationwide on October 16, 2026. The film is getting an exclusive theatrical release through 20th Century Studios, so do not expect it to land on streaming right away. The timing also works in its favor.

An October release puts the movie right in the middle of spooky season, when audiences are looking for scares on the big screen. And with a premise built around darkness, tight spaces, and a ticking oxygen clock, Whalefall looks like the kind of film that is best experienced in a packed theater with the sound turned all the way up.

Whalefall Plot: What Is Brian Duffield’s Survival Thriller About?

The setup of this movie is not for claustrophobic people. Austin Abrams‘ Jay Gardiner goes scuba diving off the coast of California to find the remains of his late father. While he is down there, an 80-foot, 60-ton sperm whale swallows him whole. With only about an hour of oxygen left in his tank, Jay’s air supply becomes the movie’s countdown clock.

Just like Daniel Kraus’ novel, the film appears to split its time between Jay’s real-time fight inside the whale and flashbacks to his rocky relationship with his father. That gives the story two layers of tension at once.

Brian Duffield himself explains the plot of the movie in the first look video of the movie, where he shared, “Whalefall is a movie about this terrifying experience. It’s about a guy who finds himself swallowed alive by a massive sperm whale. But it’s two people trapped inside. It’s our main character, Jay… and also you, the audience.”

He further called the story “emotional and visceral”, as it is as much a story about the relationship between a father and a son as it is a survival thriller. He added, “To survive, he must rely on the very lessons his father taught him. It’s everything that I love most about the moviegoing experience.”

Duffield also told THR that the team worked with whale experts to keep the biology as accurate as possible, which makes the whole idea even more unsettling.

Whalefall Cast: Austin Abrams Is Playing the Central Character

Austin Abrams leads the film as Jay Gardiner. After breakout turns in Euphoria, Wolfs, and Weapons, he got his biggest solo showcase yet in Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil. The movie is already a huge success, which gives much hope for his second big solo movie. Much of this movie also rests on his shoulders alone.

Brian Duffield shared that Abrams flew to the Dominican Republic to swim with sperm whales and to experience the feeling firsthand. Duffield even joked, “We were all terrified that he was going to try to get eaten, just so he could make it as real as possible.”

Josh Brolin plays Mitt Gardiner, Jay’s tough father, whose death kicks off the story. He mostly appears in flashbacks and as a voice in Jay’s head. Elisabeth Shue plays Jay’s mother, Zara, while One Piece star Emily Rudd and Evil Dead veteran Jane Levy play his sisters, Nan and Eva. John Ortiz rounds out the main cast as Hewey.

Whalefall Trailer: What Did We See So Far from the Movie?

So far, Whalefall has released a teaser and two official trailers. The first teaser focused on Jay’s strained bond with his father, played by Josh Brolin, before showing the moment the sperm whale swallows him.

The official trailer, which dropped on August 19, went deeper into Jay’s struggle inside the living whale. It also made it clear that his father’s survival lessons are what keep him going in there. The latest trailer, released on September 10, is the most claustrophobic look yet, packed with even more scenes of Jay fighting to stay alive in the whale’s stomach.

Whalefall looks set to be a tense, emotional ride that will make you think twice before your next trip to the beach.
