Anthony Mackie Reveals How Chris Evans Spoiled Marvel’s Biggest Avengers: Endgame Twist for Him

Chris Evans passed on the shield of Captain America to Anthony Mackie at the end of Avengers: Endgame. Although it was quite a wholesome and heartfelt moment for fans, it was also quite a shocker for the millions of people who watched the movie. 9 years after the event, Anthony Mackie revealed how Chris Evans gave away that spoiler to Mackie way before the latter had read the script.

During an interview with Cigar Aficionado, Mackie talked about the event when he was at Chris Evans’ house. The actor revealed that since he was Captain America, “he gets the [script] pages first”. When Mackie revealed that he hadn’t read the new scene that Evans was talking about, the Knives Out actor took him downstairs.

And he gave me the script and let me read it. And it was really great and really emotional to learn it from a friend.

Well, considering the fact that Mackie was about to take on the title of Captain America, Evans was surprisingly quite celebratory of that fact, something that Anthony Mackie mentioned with quite appreciation.

As the interview continued, the 8 Mile star recalled that he doesn’t know a lot of actors who would be appreciative of things like that. With Captain America passing on the shield to Falcon, it would essentially mean that Chris Evans would not be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe again (which was proved wrong recently).

However, at that time, Mackie stated that Chris Evans had “celebrated that moment with a fellow actor” despite Mackie taking his job “for all intents and purposes”.

On the other hand, Evans had quite the opposite reaction when he found out that the Falcon was going to take his position as the new Captain America.

Appearing on the The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Evans shared the incident when he realized that Anthony Mackie hadn’t read the updated script and that he “didn’t know what was going to happen”.

And I said ‘The scene where I give you the shield.’ And he said ‘You’re giving me the shield?’ And I said, ‘Oh no!’

It can be clearly seen from his statement, that Evans was also quite excited about bestowing the Captain America shied to Mackie. Agreeing with Mackie’s statements, most actors wouldn’t be so happy about passing on their mantle to a fellow co-star.

Well, all’s well that ends well. With the post-credit scene in Avengers Endgame: Encore further fueling Captain America’s return, it seems that there might just be a reunion of sorts on-screen when the two friends meet again.
