Sydney Sweeney is reportedly among the top contenders for the Britney Spears biopic that is currently in development at Universal. Speculation surrounding the casting took over the internet after OK! Magazine quoted a Hollywood insider who claimed she is being considered for the titular role. The source said,

Sydney has become one of the names generating the strongest interest.

The insider exclusively told the outlet that although a final decision hasn’t been made, Sweeney, 28, has “the profile, range, and familiarity” with the pop star’s image that makes her an “obvious person for the filmmakers to consider.” The report comes after the project is finally taking shape. For months, there was uncertainty over the biopic’s fate, particularly regarding the singer’s involvement.

The movie is based on Spears’ bestselling memoir The Woman in Me, which was published in 2023. In August 2024, Universal acquired the film rights after an intense bidding war among various major Hollywood producers. The insider report about Sweeney being considered for the role comes a day after John M. Chu told reporter Marc Malkin, “I am not even thinking about casting right now. We’re just trying to get the story right.”

Many of the singer’s fans and internet users are not happy with Sydney Sweeney being named among the stars reportedly in the running to play Britney Spears. The Euphoria star has found herself in controversies again and again, mostly because of her provocative ad choices, like American Eagle or Novig sports betting campaigns. So, some fans have a few concerns.

Some have suggested that Addison Rae or Tate McRae would be a better choice for the coveted role, given their backgrounds in music and dance. On the other hand, some internet users believe that Sweeney could do justice to the role and bring her acting talent to the table to make this biopic a hit.

OK! Magazine has previously reported that Addison Rae, Bailee Madison, and Kylie Schultz have been named as part of the wider casting conversation. Meanwhile, Millie Bobby Brown has also expressed her desire to play Britney, even before the new biopic was announced. During her 2022 appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, the Stranger Things star said, “I want to play a real person…Britney Spears.” She explained that she related to the pop star’s story, having grown up in the public eye.

There isn’t an official title available for the anticipated biopic. Britney’s memoir, which the movie is based on, explores her childhood and early rise to fame. It goes beyond her stardom, exploring her highly publicized relationship with Justin Timberlake, intense public scrutiny, motherhood, and the 13-year conservatorship that ended in 2021.

According to Variety, Jon M. Chu, coming off the Wicked movies, is directing the biopic, with Marc Platt producing. Liz Meriwether is writing. The outlet also reported that Britney herself is involved in the project.
