Task Season 2 has confirmed a Mare of Easttown crossover, with Julianne Nicholson returning as Lori Ross and quietly turning Brad Ingelsby’s HBO crime dramas into a shared Philadelphia-area world. Nicholson, who won an Emmy for playing Mare Sheehan’s best friend in Mare of Easttown, will appear in the second season of Task alongside returning lead Mark Ruffalo and newly announced cast members Mahershala Ali, Harry Melling, Adam Nagaitis, Aminah Nieves, and Edgar Ramírez. The new cast also signals a wider and heavier case. Mahershala Ali, Harry Melling, Adam Nagaitis, Aminah Nieves, and Edgar Ramírez have joined the second season, while Ruffalo remains the returning lead. There is no confirmed casting for Winslet in Task Season 2, and that distinction deserves to be kept clear. Still, the timing is hard to ignore because discussions around Mare of Easttown returning have become more serious over the last two years.

Mare of Easttown was originally designed as a limited series, but its afterlife has been unusually persistent. The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that Winslet said there is a “strong likelihood” a second season could film sometime in 2027, while also quoting her as saying:

HBO drama chief Francesca Orsi previously described the network’s posture as “early discussions,” explaining that any future version would likely pick up with Mare years later rather than directly after the Season 1 ending. That context makes Lori’s Task appearance more than a simple guest turn. It could be HBO testing how flexible Ingelsby’s Pennsylvania crime world can become. If Lori can move between shows without the whole structure creaking, then future crossovers might feel less like stunt casting and more like a natural extension of place, class, family history, and law enforcement circles in the same fictional region.

There is also a practical reason to be intrigued. Task Season 1 earned strong critical attention, with Rotten Tomatoes listing it at 96% on the Tomatometer, while Mare of Easttown remains one of HBO’s most respected limited series from the past decade. Combining them carries obvious appeal, but it also carries risk. The more Task leans on Mare, the more it must prove that Season 2 has its own pulse, its own crimes, and its own moral weather.

Ingelsby’s best work has always come from specificity rather than spectacle. His characters are not polished superheroes in badges. They are tired adults, local parents, grieving friends, compromised officers, and people who know too much about each other because their towns are too small for secrets to stay polite. That is why Lori Ross returning could be powerful. Nicholson does not need a flashy entrance. Lori already comes with enough emotional debt to make a room feel heavy.

The all-women directing slate for Task Season 2 also deserves attention. Richardson-Whitfield returns as a director, while Georgi Banks-Davies, Clare Kilner, and Kitty Green have joined the new season’s directing team. That kind of creative lineup suggests HBO is treating the second chapter as a serious expansion rather than a routine renewal.
