Heartstopper Forever gives Nick and Charlie a hopeful ending, although I finished the movie wishing Netflix had allowed their farewell to breathe across another full season. Season 3 left them more intimate and secure, but university was already creeping into their conversations, and the film turns that distant worry into their hardest year together. Nick prepares to leave for Leeds while Charlie becomes Head Boy, returns to therapy, and builds a life that no longer depends on staying beside his boyfriend every minute. Their friends face similar decisions, but a 115-minute runtime cannot give everyone the attention they once received across eight episodes. Netflix’s finale film, written by Oseman and directed by Westmoreland, still understands why this group became so beloved.

I’m still deciding how I feel about turning the final chapter into a movie. The format keeps Nick and Charlie’s story focused, yet Heartstopper earned its affection through the entire friendship group. Tao, Elle, Tara, Darcy, Isaac, Imogen, and Tori never felt like decorative company standing behind the central couple.

Reports connected the movie decision with lower Season 3 viewing figures, although Netflix never gave that as an official explanation. During an interview, Locke questioned how accurate those figures were, while Oseman described the factors behind the change as “complicated” (via The Guardian). That distinction matters because the finale should not be discussed as though declining interest has been confirmed by Netflix. 

Whatever happened behind closed doors, the consequence appears onscreen. The film covers an entire academic year, Charlie’s Head Boy campaign, Nick’s university anxiety, their sex life, mental health setbacks, a breakup, Pride, prom, and several futures. That is a packed suitcase, and a few clothes were always going to get left behind.

Nick and Charlie Grow in Different Directions

Charlie’s development gave me the greatest sense of pride. He campaigns for Head Boy by speaking openly about the homophobia he endured, wins the election, takes a café job, and fights to create a queer student group at school. He still struggles with food when stress returns, but his life no longer stops whenever Nick leaves the room. 

Nick has the opposite problem. He wants Leeds, yet every step towards university makes him fear that Charlie will fall apart without him. A nightmare about Charlie’s death leaves him frightened and overprotective, while drinking and jealousy expose how badly he is handling that terror. The film moves Nick and Charlie into young adulthood through university decisions, alcohol use, jealousy, and greater sexual maturity.

I appreciated the role reversal. Charlie once needed Nick to notice when he was hurting, but now he recognises that Nick has built his purpose around protecting him. Connor makes that dependence uncomfortable without turning Nick into somebody possessive or cruel. He looks exhausted by fears he cannot explain, and his anger during the drunken argument comes from panic rather than sudden nastiness.

Their eventual separation hurt because neither boy stops loving the other. Charlie believes distance might free Nick from feeling responsible for his wellbeing, while Nick hears that suggestion as proof that he has failed. They have spent years becoming excellent at comforting one another, yet they remain inexperienced at admitting when the relationship itself has become difficult.

Connor and Locke Earn Their Last Bow

Connor and Locke still have the kind of chemistry that makes an ordinary conversation seem private, even when millions of viewers are watching. Their affectionate scenes retain the familiar ease of the series, but the actors also handle resentment and embarrassment with greater maturity. Locke’s work around Charlie’s eating disorder remains especially careful. He never turns recovery into a victory speech, and he lets the old habits return through small changes in energy and attention. Charlie has progressed enormously, yet healing has not made him immune to pressure.

Connor carries the more difficult transformation. Nick began the series as a popular rugby player who barely understood his sexuality, and the finale asks him to become independent without treating separation as abandonment. His breakdowns never appear performative. Connor lets Nick become frightened, needy, jealous, and occasionally unfair while preserving the warmth that made audiences trust him.

I also wanted far more from Finney and Gao. Elle’s future in Berlin and Tao’s fear of being left behind deserved a fuller stretch of screen time. Their best exchanges remind us how much these characters have changed, then the movie moves on before the moment can settle. Walser fares better, since Tori receives enough room to continue her relationship with Michael and support Charlie after the breakup.

The Truham Gang Deserved Proper Goodbyes

The finale remembers everyone, but remembering a character and completing their journey are different things. Tara and Darcy plan to travel, Isaac begins writing a book, Imogen considers her future, Elle studies art abroad, and Tao remains committed to her. Michael even reaches the Winter Olympics during the closing glimpse ahead. 

Those outcomes are sweet, yet several arrive so quickly that I had barely processed one before another appeared. After three seasons of treating friendship with the same care as romance, the compressed goodbye felt slightly unfair. I wanted another substantial Tara and Darcy conversation. Isaac deserved space to discuss writing on his own terms. Imogen’s uncertain identity needed more than a passing update.

The nostalgic recreations also gave me mixed feelings. Some callbacks are genuinely moving because Connor, Locke, and the audience have grown since those earlier scenes. Others consume minutes that could have belonged to the wider group. I did enjoy Nellie’s affectionate appearance, played by Echo, and Oseman’s cameo gives longtime readers a lovely final surprise.

Yes, Nick and Charlie reunite and remain together. After the breakup, Charlie sinks into depression and struggles with eating again, while Nick begins recognising that his fear of being abandoned comes partly from his distant relationship with his father. Their time apart does not erase the relationship, but it forces each boy to address problems the other cannot fix for him. 

Charlie eventually sends Nick photographs from the camera he gave him and asks to meet at the beach. Their reunion avoids a grand promise that distance will be effortless. They admit that communication failed, confirm that they still want each other, and decide to try again with healthier expectations.

Prom provides the immediate farewell, while the epilogue answers the title’s central question. Nick leaves for Leeds, and Charlie visits regularly, becomes comfortable around his new friends, and takes part in his university life. A scrapbook contains memories from their relationship alongside blank pages waiting to be filled. Their future has no guarantee, but both boys keep choosing it.

Connor and Locke are wonderful, Oseman protects the characters, and the ending left me smiling through tears, but another season could have made that farewell richer.
