Sony’s decision to stop releasing physical discs for new PlayStation games beginning in January 2028 has left many fans disappointed about the future of game ownership (and even started a petition). This announcement has arrived at a time when game prices continue to rise, and many players feel the industry is asking them to pay more while offering fewer ownership rights, with digital purchases lacking the permanence, resale value, and collectability of physical copies.
The announcement signals a major shift toward an all-digital future, but it doesn’t mean every PlayStation disc disappears after 2028. Buried within Sony’s own statement is an important exception that allows physical copies of certain games to continue being produced well beyond the cutoff date.
Sony’s Statement Makes One Important Exception Clear

In its announcement (via PlayStation Blog), Sony said that “physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028.” This statement is clear and indicates that, from that point onward, the company will only make new games available on the PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats.
On its own, that wording gives the impression that PlayStation is bringing physical media to a complete end. However, Sony immediately followed it with an important clarification, stating that
This transition has no impact on games that already released, or will be releasing, prior to January 2028 in disc format.
That sentence fundamentally changes how the policy works. Rather than ending physical disc manufacturing altogether, Sony is ending physical releases for new games launching after January 2028. Games that have already launched physically, or are scheduled to do so before the deadline, remain eligible for additional disc production even after the policy takes effect.
In practical terms, if a game releases on disc in late 2027 and continues to sell well, publishers can still request additional manufacturing runs in 2028 and beyond to replenish retailer stock. The January 2028 deadline does not suddenly stop production of those physical copies simply because the calendar has changed.
Put simply, Sony isn’t shutting down physical disc manufacturing entirely. Instead, it is drawing a line for future releases. New PlayStation games arriving after January 2028 won’t receive disc editions, while games released before that date can likely continue to have physical copies printed for as long as publishers believe there is sufficient demand.
The Policy Still Marks a Major Shift Toward a Digital-Only Future
Sony’s digital future is coming, but physical PS discs aren’t disappearing overnight.| Credits: SonyAlthough the exception sort of preserves the production for older physical releases, Sony’s overall strategy still represents a significant change for PlayStation users. Once the January 2028 cutoff arrives, any game making its first PlayStation release after that date will launch as a digital-only title, ending the long-standing practice of releasing new games in both physical and digital formats.
For consumers, it means that future purchases will increasingly be tied to digital storefronts rather than physical media. Unlike boxed copies, digital purchases cannot be traded, resold, or added to a physical collection, making the announcement a notable shift in how players will access new PlayStation games going forward.
At the same time, Sony’s clarification ensures that the transition will be gradual rather than immediate. Even though this gives Sony full control over the prices of the games, existing physical libraries remain unaffected. And games released before January 2028 can continue appearing on store shelves through future manufacturing runs whenever publishers decide to produce more copies.
The policy, therefore, creates a clear dividing line. Physical PlayStation games are not disappearing overnight, nor is Sony ending disc production entirely. Instead, the company is phasing out physical media for future PlayStation releases, while allowing previously released physical titles to continue receiving new print runs for as long as there is demand.
Do you think Sony’s exception makes the transition easier to accept, or does ending physical releases for future games outweigh the small and temporary benefit? Let us know in the comments below.
