Star City just ended its debut season with one of the best episodes of the season, offering closure to some arcs but opening up more avenues to explore. The ending to Season 1 of Star City offered all the pivotal characters’ POV of where the Soviet is headed, along with their uncertain futures.
The For All Mankind spinoff has offered us the origins of many characters that exist in both shows, and this leaves us wondering how their arcs will shape the future. From Irina’s two-faced loyalty to Sergei’s brutal torture, there are pressing questions that need to be answered in Star City Season 2, starting with what caused the most problems.
1 How Is the American Intelligence Operating?
A still from Star City | Apple TVWe got one of the biggest twists of the show in Episode 6 when it was revealed that Valya was a spy for the West all along. Even before this reveal, the crux of the espionage within the show revolved around security against foreign threats that began with Irina’s torture of a Western courier.
We still do not know the extent to which American Intelligence is operating within the Soviet Union at this point in Star City’s timeline. What we have ruthlessly been told is how Tanya and Valya’s romance was sparked by a Cupid-like interference by American Intelligence, arguably causing a chain reaction for all the disasters that followed (Raskova excluded).
2 Will the Engineers/Cosmonauts Be Imprisoned For Treason?
A still from Star City | Apple TVThe ending to Star City Season 1 saw multiple ground and space operatives working in tandem to save the cosmonauts from the Venera spaceship, effectively working against the nation. Sergei was operating as the middleman throughout this operation, putting multiple lives at risk, including the Chief Designer and the cosmonauts in space.
The list just keeps expanding: Anastasia and her fellow cosmonauts, the cosmonaut Sasha, and the engineer Lakshmi. Raskova has managed to contain the situation in the final episode, but she will need the minds and expertise of the captured engineers/cosmonauts if the space program is to continue.
3 Are Sasha and Anastasia Doomed in Love?
A still from Star City | Apple TVThe most heartfelt moment in the final episode was Anastasia’s daring rescue of Sasha, her husband. Crossing through space and Earth, she manages to do so at the final moment, but Sasha joins her while she is being arrested.
The two of them have not had a proper marriage ever since they developed intimate feelings for one another. Sasha got thrown into the Venus mission for months, and after his “death,” Anastasia grieved constantly. Sasha’s decision not to cross the border shows that he wants to be where Anastasia is, even if it means the brutal gulags of the KGB.
4 Will Tanya Be Left Alone?
A still from Star City | Apple TVEpisode 6 was all about Valya and Tanya’s relationship origins. With the root of all the issues beginning with her ties to American dissent within the Soviet Union, Tanya is forced to be on the run for her entire life.
The final scene of Season 1 showed her with a new identity, roaming the streets in a carefree manner. However, being trailed by the KGB leaves this open-ended. Will she just be tracked in the case of further dissent, or will she be extracted back for imprisonment?
5 Will the Venus Mission Change the Soviets’ Priorities?
A still from Star City | Apple TVThe Venus mission turned out to be successful in part. Valya successfully landed on the planet after an extremely long and harrowing journey. Unfortunately, his carrier was crushed by the atmospheric pressure, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that the Soviets have been to Venus.
The Chief Designer also echoed this sentiment, similar to Sergei, meaning that the top engineers in the space program will now be hell-bent on further exploration of Venus. The higher authorities within the Soviets have viewed this as a failure despite even Raskova’s narrative that this was a successful op. Season 2 must address whether this Venus plan will continue or if the priorities will shift.
6 Will Lakshmi Expose the KGB Secrets?
A still from Star City | Apple TVCosmonaut Lakshmi is safe… for now. After a thrilling end to Season 1, Lakshmi safely gets herself across the border into Finland. She can seek asylum in the West, making her the only person in the entire list of traitors who can reveal to the world how messed up the KGB is.
However, the KGB has a trump card when it comes to its brutality. Her husband remains under house arrest in the Soviet Union, allowing Raskova to blackmail her if she begins to expose the truth. Knowing Lashmi’s devotion to her husband, it is unlikely she will allow her husband to be tortured, but how far is either side willing to go?
7 Is the Chief Designer Back For Good?
A still from Star City | Apple TVAfter the Chief Designer gets his wife to give the calculations to Sergei for a good descent into Finland, a chilling warning arises. His wife brings up a solid point that he will put his life in danger if it means the progression and safety of the space program.
Given the events that transpired and the Chief Designer’s capture, does this mean Raskova will once again use him for the Soviet space program? He has been a pivotal character throughout Season 1, and there is no reason why he will not continue to be important.
8 Will the Soviet Lunar Base Plan Return?
A still from Star City | Apple TVPerhaps the Chief Designer’s presence in Season 2 can be addressed through this. Despite his reasons for wanting to focus on Venus, Raskova might not give him another option but to work on the apparently scrapped Lunar Base. The Soviets were hell-bent on creating a space station on the moon before American Intelligence intervened, causing the destruction of the spaceship.
Now that all the threats have been contained, will we see the comeback of the lunar base plan? With Sergei, the Chief Designer, and other cosmonauts under the thumb of the authorities, this brings an interesting side to how the events will transpire in Star City Season 2, which leads to the Americans setting up their populated Moon base.
9 What Is Sergei’s Fate?
A still from Star City | Apple TVSergei has been the MVP in the final episodes of Star City. As the man who figured out the Venera’s cosmonauts are still alive, he single-handedly ensured all communications between the respective parties were successfully done in secret to ensure their safe arrival.
After the brutal psychological torture at the end of Episode 8, Raskova thanks him for his spilt secrets. Does this negate his treasonous activities? Or will the Soviet recognise that this is a capable engineer who deserves to be put back in the space program? For All Mankind holds some answers, but not all.
10 Will Star City Crossover With For All Mankind’s Timeline?
Perhaps the most burning question in everybody’s mind after watching eight episodes of Star City is how the Soviets will react to the American advancements shown in For All Mankind. Despite a huge timeline gap, important characters’ arcs have begun in the form of Sergei and Irina.
With only a few years apart from one another, will Star City leap a bit more in time to tell the Soviet side of the story, or will it continue the static timeline of telling the story up until the events of For All Mankind begin?
Here is a summary of the points discussed.
| American intelligence’s next move | How far U.S. espionage will go inside Star City and Soviet programs. |
| Fate of the “traitor” engineers | Punishments or fallout for those who saved the Venus crew. |
| Sasha and Anastasia’s future | Whether their marriage survives arrests and gulag threats. |
| Tanya’s life on the run | If she’s caught or left to live under a fragile new identity. |
| Impact of the Venus mission | How success or failure reshapes Soviet space priorities. |
| Lakshmi’s potential revelations | Whether she exposes KGB crimes from the West. |
| Role of the Chief Designer | How Raskova uses him in future Soviet projects. |
| Soviet lunar ambitions | If the abandoned Moon base plan returns. |
| Sergei’s ultimate fate | Redemption in the program or permanent ruin after torture. |
| Link to For All Mankind timeline | How Star City intersects with the broader series events. |
