Why The Big Bang Theory Star Johnny Galecki’s Acting Return Took So Long?

After years away from the spotlight, Johnny Galecki is finally making his return to acting. The Big Bang Theory star stepped back following the end of the hit sitcom, opting to focus on life outside of Hollywood rather than jumping into another major project.

Now, after his seven-year hiatus, he’s back on stage to portray renowned playwright Tennessee Williams in the Chicago stage presentation of Kowalski, as per a report from Variety. He also revealed that finding the perfect material was what finally convinced him to come out of his hiatus and return to the scene.

The planets aligned. Gregg’s writing, Colin’s vision, and the feeling that after seven years of quietly observing life, I finally had something new to bring back to the work. Add to that the privilege of portraying one of my artistic heroes, and it became impossible to say no.

Colin Hanlon will direct the play written by Gregg Ostrin for Chicago’s Lookingglass Theatre Company. Previews begin September 15, with the official run spanning from September 19 through October 25.

Johnny Galecki Opens Up About Taking a 7-Year Break From Acting

Galecki spent seven years away from acting after The Big Bang Theory wrapped up in 2019. During that time, he largely stayed out of the limelight, making only a handful of public appearances while keeping his personal life private.

Although the actor hasn’t shared a specific reason for stepping away, his lengthy absence sparked plenty of speculation among fans. Now, Galecki opens up about this new and exciting project that will keep him busy in the next couple of months.

In an Instagram post, the actor said that he had spent his long break embracing life beyond the spotlight, focusing on his family, and enjoying time away from the fast pace of Hollywood:

For the last seven years, I’ve been fortunate enough to spend more time living than performing. It turns out those aren’t separate pursuits for me. Honored to return to the stage and in my city by the lake (where the embers never fade and) where I first began working, as one of my literary heroes, Tennessee Williams in KOWALSKI this Fall.

This isn’t Galecki’s first rodeo in theater; he’s a veteran actor who starred in the Tony Award-nominated Broadway play The Little Dog Laughed, which won him a Theater World Award in 2007.

Having played Leonard Hofstadter for so long, many fans are certainly missing Galecki’s character. With the actor’s return, the most obvious question viewers would have in mind is the possibility of his return in the franchise.

The Big Bang Theory spawned several spinoffs, including Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, which was confirmed to bring back several familiar faces from the original series, though it remains unclear whether Leonard will make a cameo appearance.

Fans shouldn’t hold their hopes up too high, though; since Galecki’s acting comeback coincides with the nearing release of the spinoff show, it is unlikely that he would appear there—of course, unless he has already filmed his scenes. Still, there’s always another chance in future spinoffs!
