It happened. Lanterns featured the death of Hal Jordan in the first episode of the HBO show in a flash-forward scene. However, fans weren’t convinced that the main hero would die right at the beginning of the show. Well, James Gunn has finally hinted that Hal Jordan’s death may not be final at all.
In a recent interaction on social media, a fan fired at James Gunn for not liking the character of Hal Jordan and disrespecting him by killing him off right at the start. However, the DCU director was quick to reply that Hal Jordan’s death, “if that’s exactly what that is,” is no sign of disrespect. Check out the tweet below:

With fans in an uproar over the alleged character assassination of their beloved character, it does seem that there’s more to James Gunn than meets the eye.
How Does Hal Jordan Die In James Gunn’s Lanterns?

The show kicks off with the mysterious circumstances of the character’s death and jumps timelines in order to find out who killed him. In episode 6 of the series, titled “Bad Optics”, a new Green Lantern emerges, and the grim details of Hal Jordan’s death are given a spotlight.
Jordan receives a gunshot to the head, and apparently, he did not put up a fight. The killer also reportedly broke his nose, and there were no witnesses to the incident. As the timeline goes back to 2026, we see the dynamics of Hal Jordan and John Stewart and the time they had spent apart following a conflict.
Although quite gnarly, fans are still hopeful that their beloved character might just return since there are several ways in DC Comics that Hal Jordan has returned from the dead.
This is How Hal Jordan Could Potentially Return in the DCU

Naturally, we can assume that The Suicide Squad director is not going to simply adapt the comic books word-for-word. However, there is a theory on how Hal Jordan could potentially return in the DCU.
With Hal Jordan’s death, his soul remains untethered, and in the comic books, the soul merges with the Spectre following some incidents where the character had become a villain known as Parallax. Working as the Spectre, Hal Jordan’s reign ends when he purges both Parallax and the Spectre, allowing his resurrected soul to return to his physical body as a living Green Lantern.
Although it’s a far-fetched idea, James Gunn might just pick up some inspiration from the said comic books and bring back our favorite character. Amidst the fan uproar, we can assume that they will not be happy if Hal Jordan were to die permanently.
