SUMMARY

  • James Gunn is out to eliminate Kevin Feige's Marvel as DC Studio's over other rival in the industry.
  • Gunn's upcoming Superman movie is already much ahead in post-production than expected, which is an incredibly good sign.
  • Superman, starring David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult, will be released on July 11, 2025.

Comic book nerds are in for a treat next year as DCU’s James Gunn is preparing to take over the world of superhero movies. For many years, despite having a few hit releases, DC lived under the shadow of the iconic Marvel’s success, which happens to be the same franchise Gunn worked for before assuming the throne as the bossman of DC Studios.

Marvel has shown some signs of struggle lately with its most recent releases accumulating a bunch of underwhelming reviews from fans. This stands as a perfect opportunity for Gunn to bring the DCU the recognition it deserves, and let’s be honest, there’s no coming back from the iconic ending Kevin Feige’s Marvel had in phase three.

Turns out Gunn is also putting every ounce of his time into DC’s upcoming projects, which is a great sign for the franchise, but a bad one for its opposition.

James Gunn is already done with Superman’s assembly cut

DC Comics fans are probably beaming with joy right now. Recently, a person who goes by the name of David Richtman posted a screenshot of a Thread James Gunn responded to regarding the post-production progress of Superman, which is set to release in July 2025.

Gunn responded to a fan who asked if the assembly cut was done, and he confirmed that it had happened long ago.

Back in July, the Guardians of the Galaxy director gave an update on Superman (2025) saying that the filming process had concluded. He sent out a heartfelt message via Instagram thanking everybody who worked on the set of the film. Gunn added,

Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. It has been an honor. The destination has been Superman, but the journey has been the toil and the laughter and the emotions and ideas and magic we’ve shared together on set – and for that I am forever grateful.

It seems like Superman is on pace to possibly release a teaser or a trailer soon, especially since the assembly cut has concluded. Gunn is starting to make it seem like he’s aiming for nothing but accolades at this point.

And with a brand new cast featuring David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult, there’s a lot of hype surrounding this upcoming project.

What is an Assembly Cut and why is James Gunn’s update a good sign for the upcoming Superman movie?

Having mentioned “assembly cut” a bunch of times in this read already, it refers to the process of laying down film in chronological order based on how the script carries out the storyline. This ultimately gives the director a good overview of what the final product should look like.

Since James Gunn revealed that the assembly was done long ago, it only means that the post-production process is being carried out smoothly. It’ll also give DC enough time to create hype around the film with teasers and a bunch of trailers as well, which will work out positively following the movie’s release.

Gunn worked with an entirely new set of actors, none that worked with Zack Snyder in previous releases. Corenswet will be debuting as Kent Clark/Superman, and Rachel Brosnahan will be playing Clark’s love interest, Lois Lane (via IMDb).

Nicholas Hoult will be acting as Lex Luthor, who was previously portrayed by Jesse Eisenberg in Batman v. Superman, which starred Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill

Based on the updates given by Gunn, there is a good chance we will get to see some of the movie’s official footage during the upcoming Cinema Con in March 2025.

Superman will be in theaters on July 11, 2025.
