SUMMARY

  • In 2003, we got a hidden gem called The Rundown, which many consider the best unofficial Uncharted movie.
  • Video game adaptations often face skepticism, and the official Uncharted film didn’t help change that perception.
  • This led fans to revisit The Rundown, the unofficial adaptation that actually captured the spirit of the game—before the game was even released!

What many don’t realize is that twenty one years ago, in 2003, we got a hidden gem that unofficially is the best Uncharted movie so far and it is called, The Rundown! Video game adaptations often get a skeptical eye, and unfortunately, the official Uncharted film didn’t do much to change that perception.

This left a lot of people going back to rediscover The Rundown, the unofficial adaptation that actually did justice to the game, and it came out even before the game itself!

Dwayne Johnson Gave Us the Best Uncharted Movie in 2003!

So, how similar is The Rundown to Uncharted? Let’s break it down! The Uncharted video games definitely take a page from the Indiana Jones and Tomb Raider playbook. With its gut-punching action, strong and complex characters, and witty one-liners, one can easily argue that The Rundown likely inspired Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. Here is why!

In this 2003 gem, director Peter Berg teamed up with WWE Films to deliver this movie starring Dwayne Johnson, Sean William Scott, Rosario Dawson, and Christopher Walken.

Set in the town of El Dorado, the movie follows a band of misfits hunting for a priceless artifact. Sean William Scott plays Travis Walker, the troubled son of a shady crime boss, while The Rock is Beck, tasked with bringing him back to Daddy Mobster. While The Rundown doesn’t tell the exact same story as Uncharted, it definitely shares the same family!

Every fight, chase, and shootout in The Rundown gives a taste of the video game, even though the video game came much after. This film pulls you into the action in the best way possible, and is thus deemed as the unofficial Uncharted adaptation!

What Do Fans Have to Say About It?

Fans have a lot to say about The Rundown because once you’ve seen it, you can’t forget it! Despite being a fantastic, high-octane adventure, this gem somehow slipped under the radar for many viewers.

Even though it packed intense action and unforgettable characters, it didn’t quite get the recognition it deserved during its initial release. Now, those who know it swear by its awesomeness, and it’s time for more people to discover this classic treasure!

That entire sequence at the end with Dwayne finally using guns is one of the best build ups in a film.

Also Walken as a villain is always a good time!

As soon as I saw this I knew there would never be a better choice to play Nathan Drake than Seann William Scott

Despite all the love now, it only brought in $80 million at the box office against an $85 million budget when it came out. However, The Rundown has since become a cult classic, thriving on home video and something people keep coming back to.

The Rundown is available to stream on Netflix.
