Payne delivered his own rendition of the evergreen love tune Fly Me to the Moon, by Frank Sinatra. For the most part, he received good feedback from the judges while Cole particularly mentioned that she found Payne “cute”. 

While Payne didn’t make it through the latter rounds, he returned to the X-Factor in 2010 to give it another shot. Before belting out an electrifying version of Cry Me A River by Michael Bublé, Cole couldn’t help but notice Payne’s uncanny resemblance to Justin Bieber. Years down the line, a romance blossomed between the two singers.

Finding out about Liam Payne’s death was shocking enough for the entire world; however, it was probably even worse for Cheryl Cole, who co-parented a child with the award-winning musician. 

She recently issued a statement on Payne’s untimely passing via Instagram, posting a picture of him and their son bear when he was a newborn. She described her ex-partner’s death as an “earth-shattering event”. 

But the X-Factor alum specifically targeted the media in her statement, claiming that she’s heartbroken over the fact that she can’t protect her son from seeing what’s been reported since the incident. She also added, 

I am begging you to consider what use some of these reports are serving, other than to cause further harm to everyone left behind picking the pieces. Before you leave comments or make videos, ask yourself if you would like your own child or family to read them. Please give Liam the little dignity he has left in the wake of his death to rest in some peace at last.

Authorities reported that Payne passed away due to “polytrauma” and “internal and external hemorrhage” as a result of the fall he had from the third floor, where his room was at the Casa Sur hotel (via USA Today). More details are yet to be revealed as the investigation continues.
