Jon Hamm is back in a period drama, and this one is far darker than anything Don Draper ever faced. American Hostage is MGM+‘s new psychological thriller based on the 2022 scripted podcast of the same name, which also starred Hamm.
The series retells a real 1977 hostage crisis in Indianapolis, where an angry man held a mortgage executive at gunpoint for days and demanded to speak live on the radio.
Like Mad Men, the show drops Hamm into a slick and retro workplace as a polished professional with a reputation to protect. However, this time, it is a 1970s radio newsroom, and the stakes are life and death rather than ad campaigns.
The eight-episode first season premiered on September 20, 2026, with two episodes, and new episodes arrived weekly through November 1. In the U.S., the show is streaming on MGM+, and it is already climbing the charts.
Jon Hamm’s American Hostage Dominates MGM+ and HBO Max
American Hostage has quickly become the show to beat on MGM+. As of October 1, 2026, Jon Hamm’s thriller is the No. 1 title on the streamer in the United States (via FlixPatrol). It sits ahead of fan-favorite horror series From and the crime drama The Westies, which is no small feat considering how loyal From‘s audience has been.
The show’s success is not limited to the U.S. either. Its streaming rights were sold to HBO Max in France, Central and Eastern Europe, and Poland, giving it a much wider reach than a typical MGM+ release. That move has paid off nicely. As of October 1, 2026, American Hostage is the No. 8 show on HBO Max worldwide (via FlixPatrol).
It is currently trailing some big names on the platform, including the DC series Lanterns, the comedy Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, and the Outlander prequel Outlander: Blood of My Blood. Still, for a show that only streams on HBO Max in a handful of regions, cracking the global top 10 is a big win.
With only a few episodes out so far and new ones dropping every week, American Hostage has plenty of time to keep climbing. As word of mouth spreads, it could become one of MGM+’s biggest hits yet.
What Is Jon Hamm’s Psychological Thriller About?
Giovanni Ribisi as Tony Kiritsis and Jon Hamm as Fred Heckman in American Hostage | Credits: MGM+American Hostage is set in February 1977 and follows Fred Heckman, played by Jon Hamm, a respected news director and reporter at Indianapolis radio station WIBC. His calm and trusted voice makes him one of the city’s best-known personalities.
That reputation pulls him into a nightmare when Giovanni Ribisi‘s Tony Kiritsis, a man furious over a mortgage dispute, takes a mortgage executive hostage and demands to tell his story to Heckman live on air. What followed was a tense standoff that lasted 63 hours in real life.
Kiritsis famously rigged a shotgun to his hostage’s neck, turning every conversation into a matter of life and death. Heckman suddenly finds himself acting as a reporter, a negotiator, and a lifeline all at once, while trying not to cross any ethical lines.
The show is less about action and more about the psychological battle between the two men. Mireille Enos and William Jackson Harper round out the cast. Created by Shawn Ryan, of The Shield and The Night Agent fame, and Eileen Myers, the show is planned as an anthology, with future seasons focusing on different hostage crises.
