Fans waiting for Geralt’s final bow will be disappointed that the final season of The Witcher will not be airing in 2026. While the exact release date is yet to be announced, the fifth and final season will now be released in 2027 (via What’s on Netflix). This makes it almost two years after the previous release, which came out in October 2025.
The update comes at a time when the show has been on a downward trend. The last season saw a significant decrease in viewership and response from fans, while Henry Cavill’s untimely exit made it impossible for fans to see Liam Hemsworth’s performance with an open mind. Even the storytelling has taken quite a hit in the past few seasons. The latest season was also its worst-rated, scoring only 61% on the Tomatometer and 19% on the Popcornmeter (via RT, as of October 2, 2026). These factors make the show’s finale all the more important.
Netflix Delays The Witcher Final Season Even After a Year of Wrapping
Liam Hemsworth in The Witcher | Credits: NetflixNews of Netflix delaying The Witcher to 2027 is quite surprising considering the show was one of the most-anticipated releases from the streamer this year. It was on top of many of Netflix’s upcoming releases lists before it was slowly phased out in the middle of the year. Now with only three months to spare, the decision is final.
The fan site Redanian Intelligence had confirmed that filming had wrapped up in September 2025. A year has passed and the fifth season still seems to be in post-production. However, it is similar to the show’s previous release pattern, where each season has opened once every two years. Still, that was not how Netflix intended it.
Back in January, the streamer had teased on its official guide that the fifth and final season would come out sooner than usual, in 2026 itself. It has since removed that from its official guide. Season 4 was released in October 2025, and the announcement came as a welcome surprise for fans. But with the intense VFX and post-production required for the fantasy series, there is no doubt that it needs more time.
Both seasons 4 and 5 were written back-to-back. No exact premiere date has been given, and it is possible that Netflix wants to make room for its other VFX-heavy shows like 3 Body Problem. As the numbers decline for the popular fantasy series, this delay might be a blessing for the finale.
After a Disappointing Season 4, The Witcher Needs a Great Finale
A still from The Witcher | Credits: NetflixWhile The Witcher is ending, the stakes are pretty high for the show’s finale. Apart from narrative tie-ups, the series itself saw a huge decline in numbers in season 4, no doubt due to the change in cast. Henry Cavill exited the show in preparation for Superman (which never happened), and Liam Hemsworth replaced him as Geralt of Rivia.
Numbers for season 4 in its first week only came up to 7.4 million views, and there was about a 50% drop in viewership for the show (via Forbes). This was not a good sign, considering the show already had bad word-of-mouth due to the casting change. Season 5 really needs to bring back those numbers because the future of the franchise is at stake here. Even the overall critical and audience scores have drastically come down, with the latest score at 19% among audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. The good news is there is still a whole season to improve.
Season 4 left the leads scattered. Geralt is sworn to the service of Rivia and Queen Meve while still hunting for Ciri. Yennefer destroyed Vilgefortz’s forces at Montecalvo but let him flee, so she set out alone to finish him. Ciri could not save the Rats from the mercenary Leo Bonhart and ended the season restrained by one of his henchmen. Emhyr then ordered a powerful monster to track down Geralt.
That is a lot of threads, and the season has to tie them together without rushing.
