Eric Kripke is one of the most prolific television producers having created shows like The Boys and Supernatural. He served as a showrunner on the latter series which ran for fifteen seasons. However, Kripke departed the hit fantasy drama about two monster-hunting brothers after five seasons. Nonetheless, his name is forever tied to the now iconic show.
During an interview, Kripke spoke about how he conceived the show’s core idea after taking inspiration from The House With a Clock on Its Walls. Kripke adapted the book into a 2018 feature film, starring Jack Black in the lead role, which earned $131.5 million at the global box office. Here is what Kripke had to say about the book’s role in the creation of Supernatural.
Eric Kripke Revealed How The House With a Clock on Its Walls Inspired Supernatural
Supernatural is a fantasy drama series created by Eric Kripke, which follows brothers Sam and Dean Winchester and their monster-hunting escapades. During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Kripke revealed the 1973 book The House with a Clock in Its Walls written by John Bellairs inspired the series.
In the conversation, Kripke admitted to borrowing several specific details from Bellairs’ book. The former showrunner explained that most of the occult ideas and concepts from the book exist in the real world. He said:
When I sat down with my writers to make Supernatural when I was running it, I said every piece of lore has to really exist somewhere.
From Kripke’s comment, it is safe to assume that the creator wanted the occult and mythical concepts in Supernatural to have some connection to real-life urban legends, an idea that was strongly inspired by the 51-year-old book.
Furthermore, the creator explained that the core theme of the book which is about a family fighting against evil is also reflected in his story about two brothers hunting monsters. Hence, it is evident that the book hugely influenced Kripke while creating Supernatural.
Eric Kripke Explained Why He Had to Write the Screenplay For The House With a Clock on Its Walls
During the same interview, Kripke admitted to being a lifelong fan of the book. As a result, it is no surprise that Kripke penned the screenplay for the book’s big-screen adaptation, directed by Eli Roth. Here is what Kripke had to say about writing the adaptation:
There’s no bigger fan of this book than me, and I felt like I had to be the one to do it.
Furthermore, Kripke added that as a fan of the book he even wrote a letter to the author who was kind enough to respond. As a result, it is clear that the source material holds great significance for The Boys showrunner.
The House With a Clock on Its Walls stars Jack Black, Cate Blanchett, Owen Vaccaro, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Sunny Suljic, and Kyle MacLachlan. The film was released on September 21, 2018, and received mostly positive reviews. It grossed $131.5 million at the box office against a $42 million budget, emerging as a commercial success.
