Supernatural is one of the few shows to have enjoyed continued success over a decade, lasting a whopping fifteen seasons. Despite several ups and downs in the show’s quality and the lives of the main characters, Sam and Dean Winchester, one aspect remained consistent—their car, a 1967 Impala affectionately dubbed “Baby.”

Over the show’s run, the Impala has become an iconic and indispensable part of the fantasy drama series. As a result, it might surprise fans to learn that creator Eric Kripke had a completely different car in mind for the primary ride of the main characters. Here is what Kripke had originally intended for the Winchesters’ ride in Supernatural.

Supernatural Creator Eric Kripke Revealed the Original Choice for the Jensen Ackles’ Ride

Supernatural follows the story of Sam and Dean Winchester, two brothers who embark on monster-hunting missions across the American landscape. Throughout their escapades, the Winchesters are accompanied by their trusty steed – a 1967 Chevy Impala.

During an interview, creator Eric Kripke spoke about the idea of viewing the series as a modern Western, which required the main characters to have a primary mode of transport. Kripke originally wanted the car to be a 1965 Mustang but changed his mind after a conversation with his neighbor.

He said, ‘You want a ’67 Chevy Impala because you can put a body in that trunk.’

Kripke stated the above (via The Appeal) recalling his neighbor’s advice about the car, which led him to research it online.

Kripke added that after seeing the car’s pictures he was impressed with its aggressive and muscular style, which he felt was more American. As a result, he felt the car would fit well into the show’s world and described it as the type of vehicle no one would want to wait next to at a stop light.

Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki Both Got to Keep an Impala From Supernatural

In the series, Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki played the roles of brothers, Dean and Sam Winchester. For the majority of the series, the duo traveled across America in the Impala, which is affectionately dubbed “Baby,” by Dean in the series.

After spending fifteen seasons of the series, Ackles and Padalecki bid farewell to the series. However, the duo took home one of the Impalas each, which was used during the show’s filming. In an appearance on the Inside of You podcast, Padalecki opened up about receiving an Impala from the studio.

That wasn’t contractual. That was [a gift from] Warner Bros. It was phenomenal, they probably could have sold the cars for a million dollars a piece.

Padalecki made the above statement (via Digital Spy), expressing his and Ackles’ delight over receiving the Impala as a souvenir for their time on the series. The car was one of the most beloved aspects of the series, with an entire episode taking place from Baby’s perspective.

Other episodes, including Swan Song, have paid tribute to the car. As a result, the Winchesters getting to keep the Impala in real life is the best end for the car’s association with the series, especially since it was the closest thing the brothers had to a home for the longest time.

Supernatural is streaming on Netflix.
