In recent years, Barry Keoghan has paved the way for himself into the Hollywood spotlight. Although the 2023 film brought Keoghan major success, no one had expected it to be the one that threw him into the limelight. After all, just a few years before it, he had teamed up with Marvel to bring a new kind of superhero film to the big screen. Unfortunately, it fell short of MCU expectations.

Why Barry Keoghan believes the Eternals failed

According to posts on X, Barry Keoghan turned 32 years old on the 18th of October. Although the actor’s celebration plans stayed under wraps, it did not stop the world from looking at his successful career steps in the last few years. After all, the star may have been in the film industry for a while, but it wasn’t until 2017 that he began getting noticed.

Keoghan managed to build a reputation for bringing depth and complexity to his characters and often chooses roles that challenge him as an actor. However, one film in his growing repertoire, Marvel’s Eternals, has been a source of mixed emotions for both him and fans. In an episode of Happy Sad Confused, the actor revealed why he thought the film didn’t fare too well.

I think Chloe [Zhao] brought a whole kind of feel to it. You know? So Chloe brings – as you’ve seen from her past films – raw performances and really, really touching performances. I don’t think it was… I think it was new.

Keoghan defended the 2021 film by stating that it might have been too different for MCU fans to digest. However, he still thought that it was a work of art. After all, the Irish star had always wanted to be part of a Marvel film. Luckily for the star, he could have a chance to reprise his role as Druig.

In fact with Keoghan keeping in touch with a Marvel producer, the actor might know more than he is letting on.

Will Barry Keoghan and the Eternals return to the MCU?

Ever since the release of Eternals back in 2021, Marvel has played its card extremely close to its chest. Although fans have been wondering if the characters could blend into the existing MCU, no details have been released as of yet.

According to reports from The Things, some of the stars from the film are set to continue their superhero journey. But the plans have been kept under wraps at the moment. Stars like Salma Hayek have already signed contracts with Marvel, but the studio has not announced another project.

I didn’t get a chance to chat with her too much, but yeah. I’m always optimistic, always. I wanna know what Druig is doing right now. Anyway, we’ll see. You’re not going to get that out of me. I know nothing!

Keoghan has not had that luxury yet. However, the actor revealed that he has been chatting with Marvel producer Victoria Alonso. While that seems like a door to a potential comeback for an Eternals sequel, the 32-year-old is choosing to play it safe.

Although no news about a potential sequel has made its way online, Marvel Studios’ Nate Moore also once hinted that the Eternals will almost certainly return, just a year after the film was released.
