Few filmmaking career pivots have been as deliciously strange as Zach Cregger’s. The former Whitest Kids U’ Know comedian went from co-directing a critically mauled Playboy road comedy to becoming one of Hollywood’s most dependable architects of modern horror. With Resident Evil now in theaters, his directorial résumé has grown to five feature films and the gap between where he started and where he stands today is enormous.

The ranking considers craft, originality, performances, scares, and narrative control, with critical reception as context. Cregger’s three latest films all score above 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, compared with just 5% for his debut. 

5 Miss March is Zach Cregger’s Most Woeful Misfire

Before basements, disappearing children, and Raccoon City, there was a Playboy Mansion. Cregger and late Whitest Kids U’ Know collaborator Trevor Moore co-wrote, co-directed, and starred in Miss March, a raunchy road comedy about Eugene (Cregger) waking from a four-year coma to discover his ex-girlfriend is a Playboy centerfold. He and Tucker (Moore) then set off across the country to find her. 

The film retains traces of the pair’s anarchic sketch-comedy instincts, but feature-length storytelling exposes the material’s weaknesses. The gross-out gags wear thin, its treatment of women has aged poorly, and the emotional core never matches the lunacy. Cregger himself acknowledged that a movie demanded something fundamentally different from sketch comedy. “Every scene has to serve the story, characters have to develop on a proper track,” he explained in 2009 interview with Brian Orndorf. Its 5% Rotten Tomatoes score remains comfortably the lowest of Cregger’s directorial career.

4 The Civil War on Drugs is Gloriously Unhinged

The Civil War on Drugs is the odd duck of Cregger’s filmography. Created with The Whitest Kids U’ Know, the film grew from a multipart TV sketch. Cregger and Moore play two clueless men who stumble into the Civil War after taking the “war on drugs” literally. Its deliberately shoddy historical spectacle and absurd premise fit WKUK’s comedic universe better than Miss March’s studio road-trip formula. Cregger’s knack for escalating one ridiculous idea until reality feels unstable is already visible, though the film still feels like an oversized sketch. It earns fourth place as a fascinating bridge between Cregger the sketch comedian and filmmaker. 

Cregger never considered Miss March a proper WKUK movie, telling Brian Orndorf at the time, “I think it has a feel to a Whitest Kids episode, but it’s not a Whitest Kids movie.” The Civil War on Drugs, by contrast, is WKUK chaos with the leash removed. 

3 Resident Evil Lets Zach Cregger Run Riot

Three films into Cregger’s horror run, the filmmaker has finally inherited somebody else’s sandbox and somehow avoided building another generic video-game adaptation inside it. Resident Evil follows Austin Abrams’ Bryan, a medical courier whose trip to Raccoon City becomes a fight for survival. Instead of revisiting established characters, Cregger creates an original protagonist while recreating the games’ survival-horror staples: scarce resources, locked doors, grotesque creatures, backtracking, and the dread of opening the next door. 

As of September 20, the film holds 95% from 187 critics and 91% from verified audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. Speaking to Rotten Tomatoes, he described the movie as a “love letter” to Resident Evil, shaped by thousands of hours spent playing the franchise.

2 Weapons Turns Zach Cregger’s Ambition Up to Eleven

Following Barbarian could have been a poisoned chalice. Cregger responded by getting more ambitious. Weapons begins with a nightmare: 17 children from one classroom vanish at exactly 2:17 a.m., leaving one behind. Cregger fractures the story across several characters, including Julia Garner’s teacher Justine, Josh Brolin’s grieving father Archer, Alden Ehrenreich’s officer Paul, and Austin Abrams’ James. 

It earned 93% from 400 critics and 85% from verified audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, while the film grossed $151.5 million domestically. Rotten Tomatoes calls it a “sophomore triumph.” Cregger’s comedy background remains crucial, but he learned not to chase punchlines. “Let the movie ask me for the humor, don’t try to put it in,” he told Variety, explaining that jokes written merely to be clever were cut. 

1 Barbarian is Zach Cregger at His Most Audacious

Barbarian is the movie where Zach Cregger discovered that uncertainty could be a weapon. Georgina Campbell’s Tess arrives at a Detroit rental and finds it already occupied by Bill Skarsgård’s Keith. That premise could sustain a thriller, but Cregger keeps opening new doors, shifting protagonists, tone, chronology, and the audience’s understanding of the film itself. Explaining much more would spoil the fun. That restraint is part of why Barbarian remains Cregger’s best film even after his later productions became larger and slicker.

It has 92% from 212 critics on Rotten Tomatoes, making its score marginally lower than Weapons and Resident Evil. Cregger has explained that he started writing an exercise inspired by Gavin de Becker’s The Gift of Fear, constructing a conversation containing subtle warning signs a woman might encounter with a man. He did not initially know where the story was going. Rotten Tomatoes revisited that unlikely genesis with Cregger in 2026.

That creative instinct now looks like the Rosetta Stone for his horror career. Cregger recently told Esquire that when writing horror, “I’m trying to make what Zach would least want to see happen in this situation.” Barbarian applies that philosophy with almost malicious efficiency.
