Hannah Waddingham’s Best Show After Ted Lasso Officially Canceled After 1 Season

Hannah Waddingham has hit an unexpected bump in the road after Ted Lasso. Prime Video has canceled Ride or Die after just one season, despite the action comedy starring Waddingham and Octavia Spencer becoming one of the streamer’s summer successes. There is still a sliver of hope: Paramount Television Studios is shopping the series to other buyers, according to Deadline.

Calling Ride or Die Waddingham’s best show after Ted Lasso has more than sentiment behind it. Season 1 holds an impressive 96% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, alongside an 84% audience score. Its premise gave Waddingham a sharp change of pace, casting her as Judith Burton, an international assassin whose secret life sends her and longtime best friend Debbie Claybourne (Spencer) on a chaotic European getaway. The cancellation is particularly curious because neither poor reviews nor an apparent lack of viewers neatly explains this one. 

Ride or Die Had Numbers That Many Canceled Shows Would Envy

Ride or Die reached No. 1 on Prime Video’s daily U.S. rankings and entered Luminate’s weekly chart with 927,000 views from only two days of availability. That was nearly twice the comparable debut of Elle and almost four times Off Campus, both of which earned renewals. It subsequently reached No. 1 in U.S. minutes watched during its first full week. Deadline reported that its momentum continued into Week 3, and those early Luminate figures were covered by Just Jared. 

Nielsen provided another feather in its cap. The show debuted at No. 8 across all streaming titles and No. 3 among originals with 869 million minutes watched. Its second week brought 922 million minutes, lifting it to No. 4 overall and No. 2 among originals. Globally, Ride or Die was Prime Video’s most-watched original series for its first three weeks. Prime Video has not publicly explained the cancellation. Deadline reports, citing sources, that the show’s appeal among middle-aged women may have counted against it because that demographic is viewed as less valuable for bringing new customers into Prime. That is a reported theory rather than an explanation confirmed by Amazon.

Whatever happened behind closed doors, Waddingham and Spencer certainly did not phone the job in. Waddingham performed most of her own stunt work and told the Los Angeles Times that the production left everything on the floor: “It is splattered with us.”

Fortunately, Hannah Waddingham did not have to wait long for another major series because Rebecca Welton is already back. Ted Lasso returned for Season 4 on August 5, 2026, with Waddingham rejoining Jason Sudeikis, Juno Temple, Brett Goldstein, Brendan Hunt, and Jeremy Swift. The new chapter has Ted returning to AFC Richmond to coach its second-division women’s football team, with episodes releasing weekly through October 7. Apple TV confirmed Waddingham among the returning principal cast.

The comeback actually caught Waddingham herself on the hop. She learned about Season 4 while filming Ride or Die and told the Los Angeles Times she had “No clue” it was happening. Only two weeks after wrapping her assassin adventure, she flew to Kansas to shoot Ted Lasso’s Season 4 premiere. Rebecca has remained involved rather than receiving a ceremonial return. Episode 5 gave her a “complicated dynamic” to navigate, while Episode 6 reunited Rebecca, Roy, and Keeley for New Year’s Eve. As of September 20, seven episodes have been released.
