1 Year Later, Apple’s Riskiest TV Show Sets 2027 Release Date

A year after Apple TV’s The Savant was supposed to release on the streamer, the team has finally announced a potential release timeline for the show. Starring Jessica Chastain, the political thriller was supposed to release on September 26, 2026, but was postponed due to the assassination of Charlie Kirk.

The show has been in limbo ever since, due to the subject matter dealing with domestic terrorist attacks and real-life incidents. While many considered the show dead, Chastain and other crew members had reassured that the show would see the light of day. Now, the team has set a 2027 release date.

Based on true incidents and following the actions of an online infiltrator known as the Savant, the Apple TV show sees the anonymous user infiltrate many online hate groups and try to prevent domestic attacks before they occur. It is based on an article in Cosmopolitan by Andrea Stanley. Jessica Chastain was set to play the main character.

However, two weeks ahead of its release, the show was put in limbo due to the sensitive subject matter. According to Deadline, Apple TV considered it risky to release the show during the tense political atmosphere following Charlie Kirk’s assassination, especially because there were visuals of sniper attacks.

That vagueness stretched on for months. Early reports in spring 2026 suggested momentum was building toward a July 2026 release, with Chastain herself telling the press at the Breakthrough Prize ceremony that she’d gone from not knowing if the show would ever air to being confident it finally would (via Variety).

That July window came and went without a premiere, underscoring just how unsettled the show’s fate remained even after Apple signaled it was moving forward. While the show’s exact new release date is yet to be revealed, the Spring 2027 window is meaningful because it would make the show eligible for the 2027 Emmys. 

The Savant’s Limbo Was Not a One-Off Anomaly in TV

We have seen shows getting axed after one season or being canceled midway due to ratings. However, incidents like The Savant are unique in that a decision was made due to a the political atmosphere. As unique as the Apple TV show’s postponement is, it has not been an isolated incident, as one more prominent show faced something similar.

Alan Ritchson, the star of Reacher, responded to a fan question about adapting one of the most popular and thrilling novels from Lee Child’s novel series, Die Trying. The story of the novel follows Reacher as he is kidnapped along with a politician’s daughter by a radical extremist group who want to use her as leverage to seceed from the USA.

Ritchson replied to the fan’s question on Threads when asked why the Amazon Prime Video show had not adapted it yet. The War Machine star claimed the novel to be his favorite one and mentioned that he had gotten it approved, but it was canceled when ‘someone got re-elected’.

That was a proper jab at President Donald Trump, who Ritchson has criticized in the past. The actor has called out the POTUS for his alleged involvement in the Epstein Files, and the White House has also responded to Ritchson (via Deadline). Season 5 of Reacher is still in development and will adapt Make Me.

Incidents like The Savant and Reacher’s change in plans make it difficult to navigate media censorship, and the curbing of free speech occurs worldwide. While Reacher might still adapt the novel at a better time, and The Savant will release in 2027, none of these things should have happened in the first place.
