Game of Thrones Officially Confirms Jon Snow’s ‘Correct Ending’ Delayed to 2027

Jon Snow can finally kill the Night King himself. Game of Thrones fans will just have to wait a little longer to make it happen. PlaySide Studios has pushed Game of Thrones: War for Westeros from its original 2026 window to early 2027, giving the developer additional time to polish its ambitious PC real-time strategy game. PlaySide’s official development update confirms the new window, while Steam currently lists the game for 2027.

HBO has not retconned Arya Stark killing the Night King on Game of Thrones Season 8. Instead, War for Westeros allows players to rewrite the series’ history, and its footage has already presented the tantalizing alternative of Jon Snow battling the Night King. The official website promises players can “re-envision the most iconic battles and turning points” from the show. War for Westeros describes the campaign as a chance to reshape Westeros rather than faithfully replay its established outcome. For fans who spent years watching Jon’s war against the White Walkers only for Arya to deliver the fatal blow, that is about as close to a playable do-over as Westeros can offer.

Jon’s alternate Night King showdown is particularly enticing because the television series spent several seasons binding their stories together. Jon encountered the Night King at Hardhome, dedicated himself to convincing Westeros that the Army of the Dead was real, and eventually helped assemble the coalition that fought at Winterfell. Season 8 then swerved. During “The Long Night,” Arya Stark slipped past the White Walkers and killed their leader with the Valyrian-steel dagger, destroying his army with him. Jon never received a final duel with the enemy who had shadowed much of his story.

War for Westeros is under no obligation to repeat that history. Its official gameplay reveal confirms House Stark, House Lannister, House Targaryen, and the Night King’s Army of the Dead as playable factions, with Jon Snow, Robb Stark, Jaime Lannister, Tywin Lannister, Daenerys Targaryen, the Night King, Ghost, and Grey Wind among its heroes.

Those characters come with distinct battlefield abilities rather than serving as ornamental cameos. Jon is designed as a frontline leader who inspires nearby troops, while Tywin is an exacting commander who strengthens the Lannister war machine through battlefield coordination. The factions themselves are asymmetric, so dragons, giants, cavalry, siege engines, and the undead can demand radically different strategies. PlaySide’s development update provides an early breakdown of those systems.

In other words, killing the Night King as Jon is one possible rewrite, not the only history players can meddle with.

Why War for Westeros Was Delayed to Early 2027

PlaySide has been refreshingly plain about the postponement: it wants more time. The studio explained:

PlaySide said the delay provides additional development time to ensure the game reaches “the high level of quality we are aiming for.” The complete statement is available through the official War for Westeros development blog. That extra work extends beyond famous characters smashing armies together. One revealed map, Ashemark, is a 1v1 battlefield set in the Westerlands with two major lanes, defensible positions, and opportunities for flanking and counterattacks. Terrain and map control are being designed as genuine strategic considerations rather than pretty Westerosi wallpaper.

For now, PC via Steam is the only confirmed platform; PlaySide has not announced PlayStation or Xbox versions. The official Steam page supports solo play, online PvP, and co-op. Arya’s Night King kill remains canon, but War for Westeros is handing Jon Snow fans the keys to a different history and after Season 8, plenty may relish taking that road.
