5 Mecha Anime Better Than Pacific Rim, Ranked by Fight Scenes

When giant robots start fighting, things are bound to get loud, wild, and completely out of control. Pacific Rim showed the world just how much fun it can be to watch massive machines throw punches at equally massive monsters. But anime has been doing this for much longer. Some series go bigger, some go faster, while others make every fight feel like a real battle for survival.

With that said, this list ranks five mecha anime based on their fight scenes, looking at the action, movement, scale, creativity, and how memorable each battle feels.

5 Eighty-Six Makes Every Mecha Battle Feel Like War

Eighty-Six takes a very different approach to mecha fights. Its machines are nowhere near as huge as the Jaegers from Pacific Rim. Yet, somehow, the battles can feel just as tense. The Juggernauts are fragile, fast, and difficult to control, so even a small mistake can cost someone their life.

This is especially clear in the early episodes, when Shin and the Spearhead Squadron take on the Legion. The fights never feel like easy wins. Shin has to read the battlefield, find openings, and stay one step ahead of the enemy. That grounded style is why it gets the fifth spot. The action is not as flashy as other entries on this list, but it feels much closer to actual warfare than Pacific Rim.

4 Code Geass Turns Mecha Fights Into A Game Of Strategy

Code Geass proves that a mecha fight does not always need huge explosions to be exciting. The Knightmares are fast, flexible, and built around their pilots. That makes many of the battles feel more like a game of chess than a simple robot brawl.

The fights between Suzaku’s Lancelot and Kallen’s Guren are a great example. Their rivalry gets several memorable clashes, especially as both machines receive upgrades. Kallen’s Guren also gets some great moments during the Black Rebellion and later battles in Season 2. It ranks above Eighty-Six because the fights offer more variety and put greater focus on clever moves and changing tactics.

3 Evangelion Makes Every Mecha Fight Feel Brutal And Wild

Evangelion does not make its mecha fights look clean. The Evas move, attack, and even react in ways that can make you forget they are supposed to be machines. That strange feeling gives every battle a different kind of energy.

The Zeruel battle is an excellent example here. At first, Shinji is at a huge disadvantage fighting against an enemy that looks almost impossible to stop. Then Unit-01 suddenly goes completely wild. The battle becomes less about cool robot moves and more about survival. That raw feeling puts Neon Genesis Evangelion above Code Geass.

2 Gundam 00 Delivers Some Of Anime’s Best Mecha Fights

Mobile Suit Gundam 00 is where the list really starts to explode. The mobile suits are extremely fast, and their fights are filled with quick maneuvers, transforming weapons, and close calls.

Episodes 24 and 25 of season one of Mobile Suit Gundam 00 are great examples of that. In these episodes, Setsuna’s fights in his Gundam Exia push this machine to its absolute limits, while his one-on-one fight against Graham is also quite tense. Gundam 00 takes second place because it delivers the speed and spectacle of a huge mecha battle without losing focus on the pilots.

1 Gurren Lagann Takes Mecha Battles To Another Level

Then there is Gurren Lagann, a series that simply refuses to stop getting bigger. The battles start with traditional Gunmen fights, but the scale keeps growing until normal ideas about size barely matter anymore. By the time it reaches the final episodes, Simon and the others are fighting on a completely different level. The final battle against the Anti-Spiral is the clearest example of this insane escalation.

This is why Gurren Lagann takes the top spot. Pacific Rim is fantastic at making giant machines feel heavy and powerful, but Gurren Lagann goes somewhere completely different. Its fights keep raising the stakes until galaxies themselves become part of the action. Very few mecha anime have ever matched that level of pure imagination.
