4 Years Later, Game of Thrones Star’s Official MCU Update Spells Trouble for Moon Knight

Game of Thrones star Kit Harington played Dane Whitman, a.k.a. Black Knight, in Eternals, but he seems to have no clear future in the franchise as of now. Harington was teased to return in future MCU projects, with the post-credits scene where he would join hands with Mahershala Ali’s Blade in the franchise.

However, the actor has now revealed that there was no clear pitch made to him, debunking rumors about a possible Midnight Sons movie. The film would have brought together not only Blade and Black Knight, but also another fan-favorite MCU character whose future is undecided now: Moon Knight.

Kit Harington’s appearance in Eternals was quite interesting. He played Dane Whitman, who is in a relationship with Sersi and is introduced to the world of the Deviants and the Eternals through her. However, in the post-credits scene, the Game of Thrones star is teased to wield the Ebony Blade in the future, hinting at his oncoming transformation as the Black Knight.

With the character already cast, and Mahershala Ali chosen as the MCU’s Blade at the time, it was only a matter of time before all the Midnight Sons came together for a film. However, the troubles with Ali’s Blade film kept delaying Harington’s return to the MCU, and now, it seems to be more unclear than ever.

Harington recently revealed in the Happy Sad Confused podcast that Kevin Feige had not disclosed a full plan when pitching the role to him and that, despite the rumors, there was no pitch for a Midnight Sons movie.

I think there’s something fascinating to play with the Black Knight, and I felt this from the start that the Ebony Blade is one that he uses and then gets bloodlust, and I think…there’s an interesting story of someone going from hero to villain, right there. So, you know, anyone from Marvel watching…there were all sorts of ideas… but nothing solid ever kind of communicated.

It looks like the MCU had plans for Black Knight, but the delay in Blade and the pivot from Kang Dynasty changed many of them. The pivot also seems to have affected the return of the fan-favorite character, Moon Knight, who debuted in the MCU with his own Disney+ miniseries starring Oscar Isaac. As such, Harington’s update has cast an air of uncertainty over Moon Knight’s future. At worst, the hero’s return could be shelved, since MCU has pivolted largly from its previous ideas.

It is interesting that Kit Harington did not get a pitch for a Midnight Sons movie because in April 2026, Oscar Isaac gave some hints that the film is at least being ideated. In the same Happy Sad Confused podcast, Isaac spoke about his take on Moon Knight and how he enjoyed the process of showing the DID experience.

He also mentioned how important it was for the franchise to get the Midnight Sons movie right because they were expressing something real with them. Now that Ryan Gosling has joined the MCU as Ghost Rider, it is only a matter of time before everyone comes together. However, fans might have to wait for it to happen.

All hands on the MCU are set towards Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars, which will close the Multiversal Saga. Ryan Gosling’s Ghost Rider with Shawn Levy is only set to release in 2028. With the X-Men movie also coming in the same year, Marvel is gearing up for a new saga, possibly exploring Mutants and Cosmic powers.

Hopefully by that time, Kevin Feige will figure out how to mount Mahershala Ali’s Blade and bring back Dane Whitman and Moon Knight to the fold.
