16 Years Later, Sandra Bullock Officially Opens Up About Jesse James Divorce

In March 2010, days after Sandra Bullock won the Best Actress Oscar for The Blind Side, reports emerged that her husband Jesse James had been unfaithful. She filed for divorce the following month, and it was finalized that June. Bullock has said almost nothing about it in the years since.

She is now opening up to her friend Jennifer Aniston in Interview Magazine‘s September cover story about the divorce that rattled her. The conversation touched upon her 2013 movie, Gravity, which she called “the most meaningful” movie to her. She shared that the movie “was paralleling where I was.”

Without naming Jesse James or addressing the scandal directly, she told Aniston, “It was during a really dark time in my life. I was raising and protecting a little smurf while I was trying to grieve, trying to get out of it.” She was referring to grieving the end of her marriage to James.

She further shared that she was also stranded in her life like in the movie. She said, “Being locked in a box by myself with no one to talk to for nine hours a day, you do a lot of thinking.” She was raising a newborn son, Louis, at the time.

Jennifer Aniston and Sandra Bullock further discussed the latter’s son, Louis, who she said came into the picture “at the very end of 2009.” Aniston’s response was “Boy, honey,” suggesting that his arrival coincided with one of the most difficult periods of Bullock’s life. Bullock further narrated a story that painted a picture of how harrowing the experience was.

She had been clearing out a closet at the time when she found the hockey bags she once used for stuffing clothes into when travelling. She proceeds to tell the next part with caution, asking Child Protective Services to not come after her. She shared, “When the poop hit the fan for me, when, we know what that is, I realized I had to get out of the house because the paparazzi were going to descend, and no one knew I had a newborn.”

What she did next was a mother’s instinct to protect her little one, though it might not have been the right thing to do. She shared, “So I put him in his car carrier, put it in the hockey bag, and zipped the hockey bag around him. Then I carried the hockey bag to the car, as though I was just carrying any random hockey bag.”

Louis had arrived in January, and the adoption had been kept quiet until after the Oscars. Sixteen years on, she’s still guarded about it. She told Aniston that staying private requires operating like the CIA.

She added that no amount of planning helps when someone close to you decides your privacy is worth money. She shared, “I had it happen recently and it broke my heart.” She adopted a second child, Laila, in 2015.

Sandra Bullock tied the knot with motorcycle builder and Monster Garage host, Jesse James, in 2005 and filed for divorce in 2010 following the allegations. James publicly apologized to Bullock. He took full responsibility for his actions and sought forgiveness from Bullock and their children.

James discussed his “f**ked up choices” in an interview with Men’s Journal, admitting that it was unfair for him to even be in a relationship (via ABC News). However, the reality TV star later revealed in an interview with Howard Stern that she did not love him either.

When she won the Best Actress Oscar for The Blind Side in 2010, she was the most sought-after actress in the industry. According to Entertainment Weekly, she was “courted for virtually every female starring role Hollywood has to offer.” The outlet ran with the headline that Bullock was the most powerful actress in the industry.

However, Bullock had to prioritize her personal life over the many offers, and she quietly took a brief hiatus. She became more selective about her projects, and Gravity came as a result of that picky choice.
