Content from Marvel’s Wolverine has been out for barely a day, and one small navigational effect has somehow ended up being the bigger discussion than the game’s combat or story. Players have nicknamed the glowing blue smell trail that guides Logan toward objectives and collectibles as “fart gas,” and the backlash has been loud enough that some even began asking Insomniac Games for an option to switch it off completely.
James Stevenson, who leads community and marketing efforts at the studio, has now stepped in with an official explanation, clarifying exactly when the trail appears and why a straightforward toggle to switch it off isn’t really in the cards.
When the Scent Trail Actually Shows Up in Marvel’s Wolverine
Jean Grey’s fart gas trail is NOT part of the navigation assist option. i turned it on and there’s another green line that tells you where to go. mission waypoint (yellow marker) is on as well and THAT can be turned off.

The effect in question is a trail of blue smoke that can be seen across the screen, leading players toward their next objective or a nearby collectible. It picked up its nickname after Washington Post journalist Gene Park described it that way, and it stuck fast across social media.
Responding directly to players asking whether the trail could be disabled, Stevenson posted on social media that “the scent trail isn’t always on,” framing it as a representation of Logan’s canon mutant senses rather than a generic UI marker. According to him, the effect only activates when Wolverine is actively tracking a specific scent or sound, whether that’s a person or a clue tied to a mission, or even a nearby collectible.
Why a Toggle Isn’t on the Table
Marvel’s Wolverine | Credit:- Insomniac GamesThe clarification is not enough to wash away the criticism. Marvel’s Wolverine landed with a mixed reception, settling around the high 70s on Metacritic. With this in mind, a feature like the scent trail becomes an easy target, especially since it’s one of the only guidance systems in the game that can’t be adjusted through the existing accessibility menu, which includes options like Chase assist for pursuit sequences but nothing for the smell effect itself.
Stevenson didn’t explicitly say why a toggle isn’t on the table, but his framing of the trail as an extension of Logan’s comic-canon senses suggests the studio sees it as core to the character rather than a removable UI element.
For now, the scent trail remains a fixed part of Marvel’s Wolverine, with no toggle or setting on the horizon despite the ongoing requests. Whether Insomniac manages to build a workaround around the feature in a future patch remains to be seen, although the answer likely seems to be no.
Players heading into the game in the coming days should expect the blue trail to reappear anytime Wolverine picks up a scent worth following.
