Diablo 5 Officially Confirms 2029 Release With New Timeline on 30th Anniversary

Diablo 5 finally has an official release window, and Blizzard chose the perfect moment to reveal it. During the BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremony on September 12 at the Anaheim Convention Center, the studio confirmed that Diablo V is targeting a Spring 2029 launch, tying the reveal to the franchise’s 30th anniversary year.

Alongside the release timeline, Blizzard offered a first look at the sequel’s noticeably darker premise, plus a wave of Diablo 4 updates and a surprise collaboration project with Netflix.

Blizzard’s Diablo 5 reveal jumps the timeline forward by roughly one hundred years from where Diablo 4, released back in 2023, left off. Rather than racing to stop Sanctuary from falling, players will step into a world where that battle has already been lost.

Per Blizzard’s own framing, Diablo has triumphed, and the realm’s champions have been defeated, with the story built around what players “must become when the world has already fallen.”

The game is still described as early in development, and the studio has not yet revealed the core gameplay systems or a full narrative insight. What we do have is a Spring 2029 target, which puts roughly six years between Diablo 4 and its successor, a notably shorter wait than the series has seen before.

The full sequel reveal also caught some fans off guard, since Diablo 4 remains an actively supported live-service title with regular seasonal content, and many had expected another expansion announcement rather than a mainline follow-up so soon.

Diablo 5 wasn’t the only franchise news to come out of the opening ceremony. Diablo 4 is arriving on Nintendo’s Switch 2 starting September 15 through the Age of Hatred Collection, which bundles the base game together with the Vessel of Hatred and Lord of Hatred expansions. Blizzard also confirmed the long-requested Amazon class is set to join Diablo 4 sometime before mid-2027.

Moreover, Blizzard confirmed that an animated Diablo series is now in development for Netflix, pushing the franchise into a new medium for the first time. Unfortunately, the specifics of the same are scarce for now. Diablo wasn’t the ceremony’s only surprise. Blizzard also revealed an open-world StarCraft shooter currently eyeing a 2030 release.
