X-Men ’97 Season 2: What You Need to Remember Before New Episodes Drop

1 hour ago 3

X-Men ’97 will be dropping the highly anticipated Season 2 on July 1, 2026, after two whole years of waiting. From what we’ve seen of the trailer so far, the show is expected to start out as explosively as it ended in Season 1. The mutant cast of X-Men ’97 has expanded across multiple timelines, so you can expect to see unexpected alliances form in the greater battle against Apocalypse.

X-Men ’97 Season 1 was a breath of fresh air, taking us back to the retro aesthetics of early cartoon art, mixed in with modern animation and writing. Despite having only 10 episodes, the season provided a tight set of well-executed stories that adequately covered all the main characters of the show without sacrificing quality. Here is a brief recap of the first season before launching into Season 2 of X-Men ’97, along with what to expect.

X-Men ’97 Season 1 Recap

Season 1 of X-Men ’97 brings the iconic team back in a mutants vs humans battle that acted as an allegory for xenophobia and genocide. With devastating sequences and a rising death toll, the anti-mutant storyline reminded us just how much the world hates the X-Men.

The season started with good old-fashioned mystery solving as the X-Men had to figure out who was dealing in new anti-mutant technology that could wipe out mutant powers. Escalating into something far bigger, we got to see the epic trial of Magneto, where he delivered one of the best-written speeches about acceptance and survival.

Talking about a shared world, he ends with the chilling “do not make me let you down.” The folly of mankind is examined powerfully through the xenophobic lens, pushing the mutant nation Genosha towards destruction. Magneto does not want to propogate Charle’s peaceful approach anymore.

Unfortunately, the latter portion of the season was a brutal genocide following Magneto’s attack on Earth. The X-Men realize that they’ve been manipulated by Bastion all along. Despite winning the immediate battle, the larger war is looming. The ending to Season 1 saw the X-Men scattered across three different timelines.

The Scattered Mutant Timeline

With the X-Men now scattered across three different timelines, the roster will see monumental challenges for E-Day. With three distinct factions now in the process of forming, what do we have to remember before Season 2?

Ancient Egypt Faction

Beast (voiced by George Buza), Bishop (voiced by Isaac Robinson-Smith), Rogue (voiced by Lenore Zann), Professor X (voiced by Ross Marquand), Magneto (voiced by Matthew Waterson), and Nightcrawler (voiced by Adrian Hough) in Marvel Animation's X-MEN '97 Season 2.A still from X-Men ’97 | Marvel

Professor X, Magneto, Beast, Rogue, and Nightcrawler are spewed into 30000 B.C. In Ancient Egypt, they encountered a young mutant by the name of En Sabah Nur. This being is destined to become their greatest adversary in future timelines, known as Apocalypse. Forcing Professor X and Magneto together, the two must overcome ideological differences if mutants are to survive extinction.

Magneto and Professor X have been at odds in almost every X-Men storyline. Despite starting out as the best of friends, Magneto went down a darker and more morally grey path in the hopes of providing a better future for mutant life. While Professor X also wants this, the conflict with Apocalypse will add more perspective about what needs to be done for the greater good.

Will Professor X concede on certain moral ethics to take out the new antagonists? Will Magneto follow things more by the book?

Far Future Faction

Cyclops and Jean are marooned millennia ahead in time, where a bleak, dystopian future awaits mutants. In A.D. 3960, they find refuge with Mother Askani and the clan, along with the opportunity to raise their son Nathan, who will become the time-traveller Cable. Their long-denied family may finally come to fruition.

Season 1 had a hopeful narrative when it came to Nathan. The confusion of her impersonation led to more trouble between the power couple, and we’re likely to see the ramifications in Season 2. However, given the world-ending stakes, perhaps the smaller issues will eradicate themselves when they get a good long look at the dystopia their son lives in.

Present Day Faction

After the disappearance of major X-Men members, mutants like Jubilee and Forge are left behind to grapple with extreme anti-mutant sentiments. Human intolerance was at an all-time high in 1996. Cable arrives to recruit the younger mutants for the X-Force squad while Forge’s government-sponsored X-Factor team fills the superhero vacuum.

This is where we’ll get an interesting set of new mutants, and we hope to see many of them from the comics. With Wolverine and Nightcrawler also defending the timeline, this is the opportunity for them to step up as leaders.

X-Men ’97 Season 2: Apocalypse is Coming

Everything is being set up for the eventual battle against the extinction-level threat, Apocalypse. Bastion was the main antagonist and mastermind of Season 1, but he holds a tiny flame to the forest fire that is Apocalypse.

The X-Men will be encountering different versions of Apocalypse, from his early days to the dystopian wreckage he left behind. This means we can expect multiple levels of battle: a psychological confrontation, a physical altercation, and even a strategic one that combines all timelines.

We’ve seen Apocalypse’s destruction in the X-Men films, posing quite a formidable threat with his army. The multi-timeline battle will see the deaths of crucial characters. Narratively, this season will be the biggest ensemble of X-Men we’ve seen so far, and that is required if they are to be successful in continuing their species. Callie Hanna from FandomWire has already rated X-Men ’97 Season 2 a solid 9/10.
