Enola Holmes 3 Ending Explained: Who Kidnaps Sherlock Holmes & Why?

Enola Holmes 3 is the summer’s big family-friendly Netflix event. Millie Bobby Brown returns as Sherlock Holmes’ clever younger sister, and this time the adventure leaves Victorian England behind for the sunny island of Malta. In the movie, she learns that her brother has been kidnapped, sending her straight back into detective mode like the first two Enola Holmes movies.

During her investigation, she runs into some major dilemmas, like skipping her wedding with Tewkesbury, the kidnapping of her future mother-in-law, and coming face-to-face with an old enemy who is behind the crimes. In the process, she also uncovers a major scandal.

Brown is joined by Henry Cavill and Louis Partridge, who return to their roles as Sherlock and Lord Tewkesbury. Adolescence director Philip Barantini is taking the helm for this darker and much more mature plot of Enola Holmes 3. With its trademark wit, action, and a fan-favorite cast, the movie will be an easy crowd-pleaser.

Do the Clues ‘Khost’ & ‘Wrath’ Lead Enola to Sherlock’s Kidnapper?

Enola Holmes 3 begins with Millie Bobby Brown’s character learning on her big day that her brother, Sherlock Holmes, was kidnapped. Her investigation begins in her brother’s room in their hotel in Malta. She sees signs of a struggle and deduces that her brother would leave clues for her.

And she finds the first one in no time. On her brother’s mirror, written in Morse code, is the word ‘Khost’. Dr. Watson, who helps her with this investigation, tells her that Khost is in Afghanistan, a piece of information he knew because the Anglo-Afghan war took place there.

The other clue Enola has is the man that her brother was watching at the dinner the previous night. She finds the man and tries to capture him, but he is shot before Enola can get to him. The dying man tells her the word ‘Wrath’, which is her second clue.

Before she can find anything more, a fire breaks out at the hotel, and Lady Tewkesbury goes missing. She believes the two are connected and later learns from a Maltese revolutionary named Mikiel Mizzi that a woman named Adeline Rathe is behind the kidnappings, leading her to the conclusion that the clue ‘Wrath’ could be ‘Rathe’.

However, this woman is said to be a ghost. In her pursuit of a spy for Adeline Rathe, she finally reaches the mastermind behind the kidnappings. It was Moriarty, Sharon Duncan-Brewster’s character, returning from the previous movie.

What Happens to Moriarty and the Gold She Is After?

Enola learns that Moriarty has kidnapped her brother and Lady Tewkesbury. She attempts to kill her, but Enola is saved by her mother, Eudoria Holmes. Helena Bonham Carter‘s wickedly charming mother stays to help her daughter figure out why Moriarty planned the kidnappings.

Lord Tewkesbury, Dr. Watson, Mikiel, and the mother and daughter put their heads together to deduce that Moriarty’s mission had something to do with the Anglo-Afghan War in Khost. While Tewkesbury and Dr. Watson ask questions about Khost to the Brigadier, who is also the former’s godfather, Enola and her mother break into the records room of the British Military Headquarters to find records related to the war in Khost.

She learns that the British soldiers had killed people and looted gold from a shrine in Khost. When Enola confronts the Brigadier with this information, he admits it and tells Tewkesbury that his father led the operation, breaking the young Lord’s heart. However, he also shared that Tewkesbury Sr. grew a conscience and hid the gold, telling the higher officials that their ship from Khost had sunk to the bottom of the ocean. Enola deduces that Moriarty was misleading her so far, so that Enola will lead her to the gold.

Enola discovers the hidden gold in a cave that Tewkesbury told her about. As she guesses, Moriarty follows her and takes the gold. However, Tewkesbury and Mikiel arrive with more men, as per Enola’s plan, to take down Moriarty and her men. A fight breaks out, and Moriarty escapes, but Enola follows her to her hideout, where she is holding Sherlock and Lady Tewkesbury.

In the ensuing fight, Sherlock briefly considers killing Moriarty so that she won’t come after them in the future. However, Enola talks him down. While it isn’t shown, Moriarty is probably taken back to jail, where she will probably continue scheming. As for the gold, Tewkesbury and Dr. Watson decide to take it back to Khost, where it rightfully belongs. The Brigadier surrenders himself, and all the British officials involved in this scandal are arrested.

Do Enola Holmes and Lord Tewkesbury Get Married?

Yes, Enola and Tewkesbury finally get their happy ending. Their relationship is tested in the first half, when Tewkesbury learns that Enola had doubts about the wedding. However, as Enola admits, Tewkesbury is a gentleman and always treats her right. We can also see that it was Sherlock who sowed the seeds of doubt in her mind.

However, by the end of the movie, even Sherlock has to admit that Tewkesbury is the right person for her. Her mother also approves of the young Lord, making Enola confident in her decision. And she talks it out with Tewkesbury, her biggest concern about the wedding: she doesn’t want to change from ‘Holmes’ to ‘Tewkesbury’. He doesn’t have any issue with that, even admitting that his real last name is Tebbity-Gore.

The wedding in the final scene is simpler than the originally planned one. And Eudoria presides over this one, after having to appear in disguise for the earlier one. The cliff wedding is a beautiful testament to their relationship.

Who or What Is ‘Adeline Rathe’?

The movie places a final scene explaining the name ‘Adeline Rathe’. We earlier believed it to be Moriarty’s secret identity and that Enola was wrong about interpreting it as ‘Wrath’. Turns out, Enola was right about this clue. After their wedding, they happily swim in the sea when the camera pans to the bottom of the ocean, where we are shown a shipwreck.

The name of the ship is highlighted, which reads, “The Wrath of Adeline”. Earlier, it was mentioned that Adeline Rathe is a ghost who secretly controls Malta. The ship that brought the gold from Khost also represented this power of control.

It is another fun-filled adventure in the franchise. Alan French of FW gave it a score of 6 and shared that “the franchise continues to be one of Netflix’s few good franchises” in our review of Enola Holmes 3.
